Description
Biancavigna Amphora Brut Nature 2020 is a characterful sparkling Glera that celebrates the ancient ‘vin col fondo’ tradition from the hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. Made in the Sui Lieviti style, this is a Brut Nature with no dosage, bottled with its natural lees for a raw, authentic expression of Veneto terroir. Unfiltered and undisgorged, it offers a more textural, gastronomic alternative to classic Prosecco while remaining bright, dry and incredibly drinkable.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Amphora Brut Nature typically shows a pale straw to light hazy yellow hue, its gentle cloudiness coming from the fine lees resting at the bottom of the bottle. The bubbles are fine and persistent, forming a delicate mousse. On the nose, expect fresh citrus (lemon zest, grapefruit), green apple and pear, layered with herbal nuances, wildflowers and a subtle yeasty, bakery note from the long contact with the lees.
The palate is bone-dry, crisp and linear, with lively acidity and a pleasantly chalky, saline edge. Flavours of crunchy green apple, white peach and citrus peel are intertwined with brioche, almond skin and a faint savoury, slightly earthy note from the extended lees contact. The texture is more layered and vinous than a standard Prosecco, with a gentle grip that makes it particularly food-friendly. While designed for enjoyment in its youth to capture maximum freshness and vibrancy, the lees and low intervention style give the wine enough structure to evolve interesting brioche and nutty tones over the next 2–3 years if stored well.
Production
Sourced from Glera vines in the rolling hills of Veneto, within the historic Conegliano–Valdobbiadene area, the grapes benefit from a mix of clay-limestone soils, good elevation and wide day–night temperature swings that preserve aromatic intensity and acidity. Harvest is typically carried out by hand to ensure careful selection of healthy, perfectly ripe bunches. After a gentle pressing and primary fermentation, the wine is bottled with its natural yeasts and a touch of residual sugar for the second fermentation to occur in bottle. Unlike traditional Prosecco, there is no disgorgement: the lees remain in the bottle (Sui Lieviti), and no dosage is added, resulting in a Brut Nature style. The reference to “Amphora” underlines the artisanal, minimal-intervention approach and a focus on texture and purity, even when stainless steel and bottle aging are the primary vessels.
Food & Serving
This Sui Lieviti Brut Nature is ideal with simple, flavourful dishes that echo its rustic, savoury elegance: think Venetian cicchetti, cured meats, fresh cheeses, lightly fried seafood, grilled vegetables, sushi, or classic antipasti. It also works beautifully with seafood risottos, salads with citrus or fennel, and dishes featuring herbs and seasonal vegetables. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C. You can pour carefully to keep the wine clear, leaving the lees at the bottom, or gently invert or swirl the bottle before serving if you prefer a more cloudy, textural experience. A brief, informal “decant” in the glass (a few minutes of air) helps the aromatics open up, but there is no need for traditional decanting.
