Description

Bertram-Baltes Spätburgunder Handwerk 2022 is a vibrant, characterful Pinot Noir from Germany’s tiny but renowned Ahr Valley. Crafted by one of the region’s rising-star estates, it showcases cool-climate elegance, precise red fruit and a vivid sense of place. The “Handwerk” cuvée lives up to its name, celebrating meticulous, hands-on work in the vineyards and cellar and continuing the Ahr’s long tradition of world-class Spätburgunder.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Handwerk Spätburgunder shows a bright, translucent ruby color with a youthful, almost shimmering edge. The nose is immediately inviting, with pure notes of wild strawberries, red cherries and raspberries, layered with rose petals, a touch of cranberry, crushed slate, and subtle hints of spice and dried herbs that speak to its cool-climate origins. On the palate, this is finely etched and silky, with a light to medium body and a beautifully refreshing line of acidity. Juicy red berry fruit is supported by delicate, powdery tannins and a gentle, savory undertone—think cherry pit, a touch of forest floor and a whisper of smoked tea or graphite from the Ahr’s steep, rocky slopes. The finish is long, precise and mouthwatering, making it an immensely drinkable yet quietly complex Spätburgunder. While it is already approachable in its youth, the wine should develop further nuance over the next 4–6 years, gaining more earthy and spicy complexity.

Production
The grapes for Bertram-Baltes Spätburgunder Handwerk 2022 are sourced from steep, terraced vineyards in the Ahr Valley, where vines cling to slate and volcanic soils that store heat and lend a distinct mineral backbone to the wines. The region’s cool climate and dramatic day–night temperature swings help preserve acidity and aromatic finesse. Harvest is typically done by hand to ensure careful selection of perfectly ripe, healthy bunches, especially important on the precipitous slopes. In the cellar, the estate favors a gentle, low-intervention approach: spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, a portion of whole bunches for added structure and complexity, and élevage in used oak barrels to bring texture without masking the delicate fruit. The result is a precise, terroir-driven Pinot Noir that reflects both its origin and the handcrafted philosophy behind it.

Food & Serving
This Spätburgunder is a versatile food wine that shines alongside dishes that mirror its finesse and subtlety. Think roast chicken with herbs, grilled poultry, pork tenderloin, veal schnitzel, or duck breast with a cherry or berry glaze. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom risotto, root vegetable dishes, charcuterie, and semi-soft cheeses like Tomme, Morbier, or mild washed-rind styles. Serve at 14–16°C (slightly cool rather than room temperature) to highlight its freshness and aromatic detail. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up its floral and spicy nuances, especially in its first few years after release.

Producer
Bertram-Baltes is one of the most exciting names in the Ahr Valley, a region long renowned within Germany for its Spätburgunder but only recently fully recognized on the international stage. The estate was formed when Julia Bertram, a talented young winemaker and former German Wine Queen, joined forces with her partner Benedikt Baltes, bringing together deep local roots and meticulous craftsmanship. Focused almost exclusively on Pinot Noir from steep, stone-laden slopes, they work predominantly with organic, low-intervention methods to capture the purity and precision of their terroir. In a region that has faced both climatic challenges and devastating floods, Bertram-Baltes has quickly become a benchmark producer, earning considerable attention for their elegant, ageworthy reds that combine classical structure with modern finesse.
