Description
Bertram-Baltes Spätburgunder Ahrweiler Forstberg 2021 is a finely etched, cool-climate Pinot Noir from one of the Ahr Valley’s standout single vineyards. Old vines, meticulous handwork and a low-intervention cellar philosophy combine to deliver a wine of depth, precision and striking elegance. This cuvée continues the estate’s tradition of bottling site-specific Spätburgunder that captures the Ahr’s unique balance of ripeness and freshness.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Ahrweiler Forstberg shows a luminous, translucent ruby with garnet hints at the rim, typical of finely made Spätburgunder from the Ahr. The nose is pure and focused, opening with red cherry, wild raspberry and cranberry, layered with darker undertones of blackberry and black cherry. With air, more complexity emerges: hints of rose petals, crushed violets, subtle smoke, wet stone, and a delicate herbal nuance reminiscent of thyme and forest floor.
On the palate, the wine is taut yet silky, with a vibrant, linear acidity that speaks clearly of its cool-climate origin. Fine-grained tannins support a core of juicy red and dark berry fruit, joined by notes of pomegranate, subtle baking spice and a mineral, almost saline edge on the long, precise finish. The 2021 vintage’s freshness and finesse suggest excellent aging potential: while it is already beautifully expressive after a brief decant, it should develop additional complexity and tertiary notes—earth, dried flowers, truffle—for 8–12 years from vintage, and likely longer in ideal cellaring conditions.
Production
The Ahrweiler Forstberg is a single vineyard characterized by sandstone loam and greywacke soils, providing excellent drainage and a distinctive mineral signature that translates into precision and tension in the finished wine. The vines, planted with the regional Stuber clone of Spätburgunder and now around 40 years old, naturally yield fewer but more concentrated grapes. Harvest is performed entirely by hand to ensure meticulous selection of only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit. In the cellar, around 70% of the grapes are destemmed while 30% remain as whole clusters, then cold-macerated to gently extract aroma and color before undergoing spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts. The wine is aged in 600-liter barrels of local German oak, allowing a measured exchange of oxygen without overwhelming the fruit. After approximately 14 months of élevage, it is bottled unfiltered and without additives apart from a small protective dose of sulfur just before bottling, preserving purity, texture and a strong sense of place.
Food & Serving
This Spätburgunder is an elegant yet serious partner at the table, pairing beautifully with dishes that echo its finesse and subtlety. Ideal companions include roasted duck breast with cherry or berry jus, veal or pork tenderloin, grilled lamb chops with Mediterranean herbs, and game birds such as guinea fowl or pheasant. It also shines with mushroom-based dishes, truffle pasta, creamy risottos, and semi-hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve slightly cool, at around 14–16°C (57–61°F), to highlight its freshness and aromatic lift. A gentle decant of 30–60 minutes is recommended in its youth to open the bouquet and soften the structure; older bottles should be handled delicately and decanted only to remove sediment.
Producer
Bertram-Baltes is one of the most exciting names in Germany’s Ahr Valley, a region long renowned for its distinctive, cool-climate Spätburgunder. Formed from the partnership of Julia Bertram—herself deeply rooted in the Ahr’s winemaking tradition—and Benedikt Baltes, the estate has become a leading voice for terroir-driven, minimally intervened Pinot Noir. Their work focuses on steep, rocky vineyards and old vines, farmed with great care and increasingly sustainable practices, to express the nuances of individual sites like Ahrweiler Forstberg. Known for low yields, native fermentations, sensitive oak use and unfiltered bottlings, Bertram-Baltes has earned a strong reputation among critics and enthusiasts alike for producing some of the Ahr’s most refined and characterful red wines.
