Description
Bertram-Baltes Ahrweiler Spätburgunder 2021 is a finely etched expression of Pinot Noir from one of Germany’s most exciting cool-climate regions, the Ahr. Drawn largely from top hillside sites, this village-level wine delivers remarkable finesse, energy and depth for its category. Old vines rooted in steep greywacke and slate terraces lend a striking mineral backbone that sets this Spätburgunder apart and firmly anchors it in its Ahr homeland.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Ahrweiler Spätburgunder shows a translucent ruby to garnet hue, true to its Pinot Noir pedigree, with a delicate brightness at the rim. The nose opens initially with a touch of wildness and savoury character – hints of damp earth, dried herbs, hay and subtle game – before revealing its core of dark forest berries. With a bit of air, aromas of wild raspberry, black cherry and mulberry emerge, interwoven with notes of white pepper, allspice and a whisper of smoky slate.
On the palate, this is a poised, feather-light yet intensely flavoured Pinot. It glides across the tongue with a fine, almost dancing precision: juicy red and black berry fruit wrapped in vibrant, linear acidity and ultra-fine tannins. The earthy-spicy nuances from the nose reappear, adding complexity without ever weighing the wine down. This is not a lush, baroque style, but a filigreed, elegant Spätburgunder with a cool, stony finish and a long, savoury echo. Enjoyable now with a short aeration, it has the structure and freshness to evolve gracefully over the next 6–8 years, gaining further complexity and silkiness.
Production
The fruit for Bertram-Baltes Ahrweiler Spätburgunder is sourced predominantly from steep, terraced vineyards around Ahrweiler, many of them classified as top sites, where 25-year-old vines dig deep into greywacke and slate soils. This rugged terroir gives low yields of concentrated, small-berried Pinot Noir with naturally high acidity and a pronounced mineral edge. Harvesting is done by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure only perfectly ripe and healthy grapes make it into the cellar. In keeping with the estate’s minimal-intervention approach, fermentation typically takes place with a significant proportion of whole clusters, using indigenous yeasts in open vats. The wine is then gently pressed and aged in a selection of used wooden barrels, allowing it to develop texture and complexity without overt oak imprint, before being bottled with minimal handling to preserve its purity and sense of place.
Food & Serving
This Ahrweiler Spätburgunder is an exceptionally versatile food wine, shining alongside delicate yet flavourful dishes. Think roast poultry (especially duck or guinea fowl), veal, rabbit, or pork tenderloin with wild mushroom sauces, as well as lightly gamey preparations like venison carpaccio or pigeon. On the vegetarian side, pair it with truffled risotto, roasted root vegetables, grilled king oyster mushrooms or charred cauliflower with hazelnuts. Serve at 14–16 °C to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity. A short decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended, especially in its youth, to let the initial wild and earthy notes settle and allow the dark berry fruit and spice to fully unfold.
Producer
Bertram-Baltes is one of the new benchmark names in the Ahr Valley, carrying forward the region’s Pinot Noir legacy with a modern, terroir-driven sensibility. Formed by the partnership of Julia Bertram, a former German Wine Queen and rising star of Spätburgunder, and her husband Benedikt Baltes, the estate focuses almost exclusively on Pinot Noir from steep, slate- and greywacke-rich vineyards. Their work has helped redefine what Ahr Spätburgunder can be: lighter in extraction, more precise and mineral, and deeply reflective of site. In a region that has long punched above its weight for Pinot Noir, Bertram-Baltes stands out for its meticulous vineyard work, sensitive cellar practices and a rapidly growing reputation among collectors and top sommeliers across Europe.
