Description
Bernard Haas Pinot Gris, Côtes de Kaysersberg 2020 is a classic Alsatian white that combines generous fruit, subtle spice and an elegant, dry finish. Sourced from family‑tended vineyards in the hills around Kaysersberg, it captures the richness and precision that Pinot Gris can achieve in this renowned corner of Alsace. This cuvée reflects generations of know‑how, with the Haas family now joined by the next generation, Elsa and Dylan, ensuring both continuity and fresh energy in the cellar.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Pinot Gris shows a bright, medium‑gold colour with lively reflections. The nose is expressive and inviting, with aromas of ripe pear, yellow apple and quince, layered with hints of white flowers, honeycomb and gentle spice.
On the palate, it is supple and rounded yet well‑balanced, with juicy stone‑fruit flavours, notes of baked apple, a touch of citrus peel and a subtle smokiness typical of good Alsace Pinot Gris. A fine vein of acidity keeps the wine fresh and food‑friendly, while the finish is smooth and persistent, echoing ripe fruit and delicate spice. Enjoy it now for its vibrant fruit, or over the next 3–6 years as it gains a little more complexity and texture in bottle.
Production
The grapes for this Pinot Gris come from family‑owned parcels around Kaysersberg in Alsace, where vines grow on sun‑exposed slopes influenced by the Vosges mountains’ sheltering effect. This dry, relatively warm microclimate allows excellent ripening while preserving the grape’s aromatic finesse. The Haas family farms their 10 hectares as a traditional family estate, harvesting by hand to ensure careful selection of healthy, ripe bunches. In the cellar, the wine is vinified in a classic Alsatian style: gentle pressing, cool fermentation to capture pure fruit character, and maturation on fine lees to build texture and harmony without masking the varietal expression. The family’s experience with top sites, including holdings in the famed Schlossberg Grand Cru, underpins the precision and balance found in this cuvée.
Food & Serving
This Pinot Gris is a versatile food wine that pairs beautifully with rich poultry dishes, veal in cream sauce, roast pork, patés and terrines, as well as mushrooms and mildly spiced Asian cuisine. It also works very well with soft cheeses and semi‑hard mountain cheeses. Serve at 8–10°C to highlight its freshness and aromatics; in a good white wine glass, it will open nicely over the course of a meal. Decanting is not essential, but opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving will let the aromas unfold more fully.
Producer
The Haas estate is a true family domaine, run across generations in and around the picturesque village of Kaysersberg in Alsace. Nathalie and Marc Haas have long been the faces of the winery, and their social, open approach has helped build strong relationships with wine lovers and enthusiasts. Today, the next generation, Elsa and Dylan, has joined them, bringing renewed energy while respecting the traditions that have made the domaine’s reputation. With around 10 hectares under vine, including holdings in the illustrious Schlossberg Grand Cru, the estate is recognized for crafting wines of consistently high quality across the range. Their Pinot Gris from Côtes de Kaysersberg is a fine example of the house style: precise, expressive and firmly rooted in its Alsatian terroir.
