Description

Benjamin Leroux’s Volnay Clos Cave des Ducs 1er Cru Monopole 2022 is a beautifully precise expression of Volnay, combining silky texture, lifted floral aromatics, and the kind of mineral finesse that makes this appellation so sought after. From one of Volnay’s highest premier cru sites, this monopole vineyard brings both rarity and pedigree, offering a wine of real charm, energy, and purity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a bright, translucent ruby hue, hinting at its elegance rather than power. The nose opens gradually with rose petals, red cherries, strawberries, wild raspberries, violets, flint, wet leaves, and a touch of dried spice. On the palate, it is cool and refined, with vivid red fruit, floral notes, and a clear mineral line running through the wine. The tannins are present but finely knit and silky, giving shape without weight, while the finish is long, graceful, and beautifully balanced. This is a Volnay with excellent aging potential, and it should develop additional complexity over the next 8–15 years.

Production
Clos de la Cave des Ducs is a tiny 0.64-hectare monopole located on the highest premier cru slope in Volnay, facing southeast. The vineyard’s clay and limestone soils, combined with old vines reaching up to 80 years of age, contribute depth, tension, and aromatic precision. Benjamin Leroux farms the site biodynamically, reflecting his belief that this approach enhances tannin quality and overall harmony in the finished wine. In the cellar, around two-thirds of the grapes are destemmed and fermentation takes place entirely with native yeasts. The wine is then aged for 12 months in a combination of oak barrels and stainless steel tanks, a choice that preserves freshness and detail while allowing the wine’s texture and complexity to build naturally.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for dishes that echo its finesse and perfume, such as roast duck, guinea fowl, poussin, mushroom risotto, veal, or seared salmon. It also pairs nicely with earthy vegetable dishes and soft-ripened cheeses. Serve at 15–16°C, and consider a gentle decant if drinking young to allow the wine’s floral and mineral layers to unfold more fully.

Producer
Benjamin Leroux is one of Burgundy’s most respected modern talents, known for his meticulous approach, deep knowledge of terroir, and ability to craft wines of clarity and restraint. After making his name in Beaune and beyond, he has built a reputation for producing some of the region’s most refined and site-transparent wines. His work in Volnay is particularly admired for its precision, elegance, and faithful expression of each vineyard’s character.
