Description

Benjamin Leroux’s Saint-Romain Blanc Sous le Château 2023 is a beautifully focused Chardonnay from one of Burgundy’s most characterful, under-the-radar villages. Sourced from carefully selected growers rather than estate-owned vineyards, it reflects Leroux’s talent for finding sites with precision, freshness, and real value. Saint-Romain has long been appreciated by Burgundy lovers for offering impressive quality with a distinct sense of place.

Tasting Notes
Pale golden in the glass, this wine opens with an elegant, lifted bouquet of pomelo, citrus zest, green apple, and subtle white stone fruit. As it evolves, a refined mineral edge emerges, adding tension and definition to the nose. On the palate, it is energetic and lively, with a silky, supple texture that gives the Chardonnay plenty of depth without heaviness. Crisp acidity drives flavors of lemon, orchard fruit, and saline stone, finishing with a crunchy, mouthwatering mineral line. It should drink well now for its freshness and precision, while also having the structure to develop additional complexity over the next few years.

Production
The fruit comes exclusively from the lieu-dit Sous le Château in Saint-Romain, a cool site west of Meursault where the valley climate allows for a longer, slower ripening cycle. This helps preserve freshness and aromatic clarity in the Chardonnay. Benjamin Leroux works with hand-selected growers and personally approves the fruit quality, then ages the wine for 12 months in a combination of small and large oak barrels to build texture while keeping the vineyard expression front and center.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for baked white fish, especially with beurre blanc, buttered potatoes, dill, and lemon zest. It is also a fine wine to enjoy on its own in large Burgundy glasses, where its mineral detail and layered texture can fully unfold. Serve chilled, ideally around 10–12°C, and decanting is generally not necessary unless you want to give it a little extra air before serving.

Producer
Benjamin Leroux is one of Burgundy’s most respected modern négociants and winemakers, known for his meticulous selection of fruit and his finesse-driven style. Though he does not farm his own vineyards, he has built a strong reputation by working with trusted growers and focusing on sites that express nuance and value. Across his range, his wines are admired for their purity, elegance, and distinctive mineral signature.
