Description
Belair-Monange 2020 is a powerful yet polished Saint-Émilion from one of Bordeaux’s most storied limestone plateaus. This is a modern Right Bank grand vin, marrying opulent ripe fruit with precision, tension and a long, architectural finish. For collectors and enthusiasts, 2020 Belair-Monange is a benchmark vintage that shows the estate at the height of its powers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Belair-Monange 2020 is deep, opaque ruby with purple reflections clinging to the rim, suggesting both concentration and youth. The nose is alluring and complex: rich black and red cherries, ripe plum and black raspberry are layered with sweet baking spices, hints of vanilla and cocoa from new oak, rose petals and a subtle graphite-mineral edge.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, plush and layered, with a core of sun-kissed dark fruit framed by finely grained but assertive tannins. Flavors of black cherry compote, damson plum and ripe blackberry unfold alongside notes of clove, star anise, espresso and a touch of toasted oak. Despite its richness and elevated alcohol, the wine remains fresh and poised, anchored by vibrant acidity and a strong limestone-driven backbone. The finish is long, warming and persistent, indicating excellent aging potential: it will reward patience over 10–25 years, gaining further complexity and silkier texture with time in the cellar.
Production
Château Belair-Monange sits on some of Saint-Émilion’s most coveted terroir, a mosaic of limestone plateau and clay-limestone slopes that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. The 2020 vintage is typically based predominantly on Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc, all hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, grapes are carefully sorted before a gentle vinification in temperature-controlled vats, emphasizing purity of fruit and extraction of fine tannins rather than harsh structure. The wine is then aged in a high proportion of French oak barriques (a significant share new), where it gains its creamy, spicy complexity and integrates its generous structure before bottling.
Food & Serving
Belair-Monange 2020 is an excellent partner for richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, braised short ribs, duck breast, venison and mushroom-based dishes. It also shines alongside truffle risotto, aged Comté or hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase both its aromatic lift and textural depth. Decanting is strongly recommended: 1–2 hours for current drinking will help soften the tannins and open up the bouquet, while older bottles in future years may need a shorter decant to remove sediment and allow the wine to fully express its tertiary nuances.
Producer
Château Belair-Monange is a historic Saint-Émilion estate whose origins trace back centuries on the famous limestone plateau just above the medieval village. Now under the stewardship of the Moueix family—renowned for their work at estates such as Château La Fleur-Pétrus and Trotanoy—Belair-Monange has been elevated to one of the most exciting properties on the Right Bank. The fusion of Belair and Clos La Madeleine, along with extensive vineyard and cellar investments, has significantly raised quality, culminating in highly acclaimed vintages like 2020. Today, Belair-Monange stands as a reference point for refined yet powerful Saint-Émilion, embodying both the tradition of its exceptional terroir and a contemporary, precise approach to winemaking.
