Description

Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) 2012 is a classic, pedigreed Saint-Émilion that marries Right Bank richness with a distinctly Left Bank sense of structure and precision. Sourced from one of the appellation’s most storied limestone slopes, this vintage offers both immediate charm and the promise of graceful evolution in the cellar. A wine for collectors and Bordeaux lovers alike, it stands out for its depth, balance, and unmistakable Saint-Émilion identity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2012 Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) shows a deep, opaque ruby core with just a hint of garnet at the rim, reflecting its early stages of maturity. The bouquet is intense yet finely etched, opening with ripe blackberry and blackcurrant layered over notes of cedar, cigar tobacco, graphite, and a touch of mocha and dried violet. With air, subtler nuances of forest floor, pencil shavings, and warm spice emerge, recalling top modern Right Bank Bordeaux with a Left Bank twist. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, poised, and structured, with fine-grained tannins and a vibrant, refreshing line of acidity. Dark berry and plum fruit are framed by hints of licorice, cocoa, and savory tobacco, giving the wine a slightly masculine, architectural feel while still retaining the plush fruit core that Saint-Émilion fans love. The finish is long, harmonious, and refined, with lingering mineral and cedar notes. While already accessible, this 2012 still has excellent aging potential; it can comfortably develop and gain complexity over the next 8–12 years, depending on cellar conditions.

Production
Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) sits on one of Saint-Émilion’s finest limestone plateaus and slopes, a terroir that naturally yields wines of tension, minerality, and depth. The vineyard is primarily planted to Merlot with a significant portion of Cabernet Franc, rooted in a mix of clay over limestone that helps balance richness and freshness, even in warmer years. Grapes are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure optimal ripeness and selection. In the cellar, gentle extraction and temperature-controlled fermentation preserve aromatics and finesse, followed by élevage in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new) to build texture and complexity without overwhelming the character of the fruit or the terroir.

Food & Serving
This 2012 Saint-Émilion is a versatile partner for refined yet flavorful dishes. It shines alongside roast lamb with herbs, beef ribeye or filet mignon, confit or roasted duck, and game birds such as pigeon or guinea fowl. It also complements truffle dishes, mushroom ragout, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to soften the tannins, awaken the bouquet, and reveal its layered, mineral-driven character.

Producer
Château Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) is one of the historic names of Saint-Émilion, with vineyard origins dating back several centuries on the appellation’s famed limestone coteau. Long classified among the top estates of the region, it has earned a reputation for producing deeply structured, ageworthy wines that capture the essence of Saint-Émilion’s plateau and slopes. Its small, exceptionally well-situated vineyard has made the château a favorite among Bordeaux insiders, and several highly acclaimed vintages over the past decades have cemented its status as one of the Right Bank’s reference-point properties.
