Description

Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) 2005 is a classic, pedigreed Saint-Émilion from one of Bordeaux’s most hallowed limestone slopes. This is a deeply expressive Right Bank red that marries the richness of Merlot with the lift and structure of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. From a celebrated vintage and a tiny, low-yielding vineyard, the 2005 shows why Beauséjour Duffau Lagarrosse is so revered among Bordeaux collectors and insiders.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2005 Beauséjour Duffau Lagarrosse Rødvin is a deep garnet to ruby with a dense core and just a hint of brick at the rim, reflecting its graceful evolution. The nose is layered and complex, offering black raspberry and plum compote, blackcurrant, and blueberry, woven with notes of graphite, crushed chalk, cigar box, violets, and a subtle smoky, toast-infused edge. On the palate, this is full-bodied and concentrated yet poised, with a velvety attack that opens into a powerful, tightly knit mid-palate. Flavors of dark berries, ripe plum, licorice, and black cherry are underpinned by mineral tones, fine-grained tannins, and a vibrant line of acidity that keeps the wine fresh despite its depth. Hints of cocoa, pencil lead, and savory spice emerge on the long, persistent finish. The 2005 vintage has endowed this wine with impressive structure and balance; it is beautifully drinkable now with proper aeration, but still has significant aging potential, easily evolving and gaining complexity through 2035 and, for well-stored bottles, even longer.

Production
Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) sits on the famed limestone plateau and upper slopes of Saint-Émilion, where thin clay topsoils lie over pure limestone bedrock, giving the wines both richness and a distinctive, chalky minerality. The vineyard is planted predominantly to Merlot, with significant Cabernet Franc and a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, all farmed at very low yields to maximize concentration. Grapes are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, at optimal ripeness, with stringent sorting to retain only the healthiest, most perfect berries. Vinification typically involves fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, with careful extraction to preserve finesse rather than sheer power. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques (a significant portion new) for an extended period, allowing the tannins to polish and the aromatics to integrate, while still showcasing the character of this exceptional terroir.

Food & Serving
This Saint-Émilion is a natural partner for refined, richly flavored dishes such as roasted lamb with herbs, beef ribeye, duck breast, or braised short ribs, as well as game birds and dishes featuring truffles or wild mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Comté or matured Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. Decanting is highly recommended—at least 1–2 hours for a younger-feeling bottle, and around 45 minutes for more evolved bottles—to allow the wine to unfurl its layers of fruit, florals, and mineral nuance.

Producer
Château Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) is one of the historic, family-held jewels of Saint-Émilion, classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé and famed for producing some of the Right Bank’s most hauntingly complex and long-lived wines. Its compact, high-quality vineyard on the central limestone plateau has long been recognized as a blue-chip terroir, with a track record of legendary vintages that are highly sought after by collectors. Over the years, the estate has continually refined its viticulture and winemaking, focusing on low yields, meticulous vineyard work, and precision in the cellar to express the singular minerality and power of its site. Beauséjour Duffau Lagarrosse has earned a reputation for producing profound, ageworthy wines that stand among the most admired in Bordeaux.
