Description
Batasiolo Barolo Brunate 2016 is a single-cru Barolo from one of the most celebrated vineyards in Piemonte, crafted entirely from Nebbiolo. Drawn from the revered Brunate hill, it marries power and finesse in a vintage known for balance, purity of fruit and classic structure. This is a Barolo for collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate depth, nuance and long-term aging potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2016 Brunate shows a deep garnet core with brick-red highlights at the rim, already hinting at its traditional Barolo character. The nose is highly aromatic and layered: rose petals, violet, and dried flowers sit alongside ripe red cherry, wild strawberry and plum, wrapped in notes of tar, licorice, tobacco, leather and a touch of sweet spice.
On the palate, this is structured yet remarkably refined, with firm, fine-grained tannins and a vibrant, persistent acidity that drives the wine forward. Flavors of red cherry, blood orange and raspberry are joined by earthy undertones, truffle, dried herbs, anise and a subtle smokiness from oak aging. The finish is long, savory and complex, suggesting excellent cellar potential. 2016 is a classic, ageworthy vintage in Barolo, and this wine should evolve beautifully for 15–20 years from the vintage, gaining more tertiary notes of leather, forest floor and dried fruit with time.
Production
Brunate is one of Barolo’s most historic crus, a south/south-west facing amphitheater on calcareous clay and marl soils at around 300–350 meters above sea level, shared between the communes of La Morra and Barolo. These poor, well-drained soils naturally limit yields and concentrate the Nebbiolo grapes. Beni di Batasiolo harvests by hand, carefully selecting bunches at optimal ripeness to preserve aromatics and structural balance. After gentle crushing, the wine typically undergoes a traditional, extended maceration on the skins to extract color, tannin and complexity, followed by fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks. The Barolo Brunate then ages for an extended period in large oak casks (often Slavonian, sometimes complemented by French oak) for around two years, followed by further bottle aging before release, allowing the powerful Brunate character to integrate and harmonize.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is an outstanding match for rich, savory dishes such as braised beef (brasato al Barolo), osso buco, game meats, truffle-infused dishes, and roasted lamb. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature pecorino, as well as mushroom-based risottos. Serve at 16–18°C, ideally in large Burgundy or Barolo stemware to let the aromatics fully unfold. Decanting for 1.5–3 hours is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and open up the bouquet, especially if enjoyed before it reaches full maturity.
Producer
Beni di Batasiolo is a family-owned estate rooted in the heart of the Langhe, with a history that traces back to the mid-20th century and deep ties to the Barolo region. Over time, the Dogliani family has assembled an impressive patchwork of vineyards in some of Barolo’s most renowned crus, including Brunate, Cerequio and Bussia, giving them privileged access to top Nebbiolo sites. The estate is recognized as an important ambassador for Piemonte wines globally, combining traditional Barolo craftsmanship with carefully managed modern techniques. Their single-cru bottlings, such as Barolo Brunate, are admired for expressing the distinct personality of each vineyard and have contributed to Batasiolo’s reputation among both collectors and dedicated Barolo enthusiasts.
