Description
Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 1996 is a benchmark bottle for lovers of traditional, uncompromising Barolo. Sourced exclusively from the estate’s four historic crus – Cannubi, San Lorenzo, Rué and Rocche di La Morra – it is blended into a single cuvée that captures the soul of Barolo rather than spotlighting individual parcels. From one of the most revered and classically styled vintages of the 1990s, this wine embodies the house’s philosophy of authenticity, longevity and terroir transparency.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 1996 shows a deep garnet core with brick-tinged rims, a clear sign of graceful bottle age. The nose is layered and complex, opening with dried roses, tar and ripe sour cherries, then evolving towards balsamic notes, tobacco leaf, porcini, leather, liquorice and a subtle forest-floor earthiness.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied, firmly structured Barolo that has now entered a beautiful plateau of maturity. The tannins, once formidable, are today finely knit yet still present, supported by vibrant, classic Nebbiolo acidity and a pronounced mineral edge. Flavours of macerated red cherries, dried cranberries and blood orange are interwoven with savoury notes of herbs, tar, spice and truffles. The finish is very long, layered and persistent, with tertiary nuances that continue to unfold in the glass. At this stage, top bottles are at or near peak drinking, with the capacity to evolve further complexity over the next 5–10 years when well stored.
Production
The fruit for this Barolo comes from four emblematic vineyards in Barolo and La Morra: the sandier soils of Cannubi contribute perfume and finesse, while the more clay- and limestone-rich parcels of San Lorenzo, Rué and Rocche di La Morra add depth, grip and structure. 1996 was characterized by a cool spring, warm summer and a long, dry autumn, allowing a slow, complete ripening of Nebbiolo with thick skins and high aromatic concentration. Grapes were farmed conventionally and harvested by hand at optimal maturity. In the cellar, Mascarello followed rigorously traditional methods: a long maceration of around 30 days on the skins in cement tanks, followed by approximately 36 months of maturation in large Slavonian oak botti before extended bottle ageing, with no new oak influence and no single-vineyard bottlings.
Food & Serving
This mature, traditional Barolo shines alongside classic Piemontese cuisine: tajarin with truffles, brasato al Barolo, ossobuco, slow-braised beef, game birds, venison and mushroom-based dishes. It also pairs beautifully with aged cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano, mature Taleggio or Castelmagno. Serve at around 18 °C, ideally in large Burgundy-style glasses to allow the aromatics to expand. Decant gently 4–5 hours before serving to help the wine fully open and to separate it from any natural sediment developed over decades of aging.
Producer
Bartolo Mascarello is one of the most revered traditional producers in Barolo, a family-run estate that has become synonymous with authenticity and resistance to fashion. Based in the village of Barolo, the winery has long championed blending fruit from multiple top sites into a single Barolo, in deliberate contrast to the trend towards single-vineyard bottlings. Bartolo himself was a vocal defender of classic methods: long macerations, ageing in large Slavonian oak and no barriques or modernist shortcuts. Under the stewardship of his daughter Maria Teresa, the estate continues to uphold these principles and remains a touchstone for classically styled Barolo, with its wines—especially from great vintages like 1996—highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs worldwide.
