Description

Brovia Barolo 2009 is a classic, traditionally crafted Barolo that brings together fruit from several of the estate’s top vineyards, including Villero, Garblèt Sue’, Rocche di Castiglione and other carefully selected parcels. This multi-cru blend is designed to capture the house style: power wrapped in elegance, with precision, depth and a strong sense of place. The warm 2009 vintage lends a generous, ripe fruit profile and earlier approachability, while still preserving the structure and character that have made Barolo one of Italy’s great age‑worthy reds.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2009 Barolo Brovia shows a deep garnet hue with brick-orange reflections appearing at the rim, a sign of evolving Nebbiolo. The nose is complex and expressive, opening with ripe cherries, plum and wild berries, followed by layers of violet and dried rose petals, tobacco leaf, worn leather and hints of undergrowth. Subtle notes of licorice, balsamic, spice box and earth emerge with air, adding further nuance. On the palate, this is a full-bodied yet finely poised Barolo, with rich, ripe red and dark fruit framed by polished, mature tannins and a vibrant, savory acidity that keeps the wine lively. Flavors of cherry, raspberry and dried strawberry mingle with hints of tar, sweet spice, balsamic tones and forest floor, leading into a long, harmonious finish. The warmth of the 2009 vintage gives a rounded, generous mouthfeel and an inviting, open-knit character. While already drinking beautifully, it still has the structure to develop additional tertiary notes—truffle, dried flowers, leather—over the next 10–15 years under good cellaring conditions.

Production
Brovia’s Barolo 2009 is rooted in the marl- and clay-rich hills of Piemonte’s Barolo DOCG, where Nebbiolo thrives on sunny slopes with excellent drainage and marked day–night temperature swings. The grapes are sourced from several of Brovia’s prime crus, including Villero, Garblèt Sue’ and Rocche di Castiglione, each bringing its own nuance of structure, perfume and depth to the final blend. Harvest is carried out by hand to ensure careful selection of perfectly ripe, healthy fruit. In the cellar, Brovia follows a traditional Barolo approach: a long maceration on the skins to extract color, aroma and firm yet refined tannic structure, followed by fermentation and then approximately 24 months of aging in large Slavonian oak casks. These neutral botti respect the character of Nebbiolo and the terroir, allowing slow oxygen exchange and the gradual development of complexity, before further refinement in bottle prior to release.

Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes and classic Piedmontese cuisine. Think braised meats such as ossobuco, brasato al Barolo, game dishes, roast lamb, truffle-infused risotto, mushroom-based pastas, and well-aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or aged Pecorino. It also pairs beautifully with earthy dishes featuring porcini, polenta and slow-cooked ragù. Serve at 17–18 °C in large Burgundy or Barolo glasses to allow the aromatics to open up. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially while the wine is still on the younger side of its evolution, to soften the tannins and fully release its layered bouquet.

Producer
Founded in 1863 in Castiglione Falletto, Brovia is one of Barolo’s benchmark traditional producers, renowned for its unwavering commitment to terroir-driven Nebbiolo. The estate is family-run and has become particularly esteemed for its single-vineyard bottlings from some of the most coveted crus in the region, including Villero, Rocche di Castiglione and Garblèt Sue’. By favoring meticulous work in the vineyard, moderate yields, and classic winemaking with long macerations and aging in large Slavonian oak, Brovia has earned a reputation for producing Barolos of purity, finesse and longevity. Within Piemonte, the estate is widely respected for its authenticity, its consistent quality across vintages, and its important role in preserving the traditional style of Barolo while showcasing the nuance of each vineyard and year.
