Description

Barnert & Drewitz Silvaner Auf dem Buberg Alte Reben 2022 is a characterful dry white from the lesser‑known yet highly regarded Hessische Bergstraße in Germany. Crafted from old-vine Silvaner, it offers both precision and depth, showcasing the grape’s ability to transmit nuanced terroir. This cuvée stands out for its combination of lively freshness, fine texture and a quietly complex, mineral-driven profile.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Silvaner typically shows a pale straw to light lemon color with greenish reflections, hinting at its youthful energy. The nose is subtle yet focused, with notes of crisp green apple, pear skin and white peach, layered with fresh herbs such as chive and lemon balm, plus a gentle floral lift and a distinct stony, wet-rock impression. On the palate, expect a dry, medium-bodied wine with vibrant, well-integrated acidity and a clean, linear structure. Flavors of orchard fruit and citrus—think green apple, quince and lemon zest—are underpinned by savory herbal nuances and a salty, mineral edge from the Buberg site. The finish is long, zesty and refreshingly precise, making it both food-friendly and highly drinkable. While fully enjoyable now for its brightness and clarity, this Silvaner should develop additional complexity—more nutty, honeyed and herbal notes—over the next 3–5 years with careful cellaring.

Production
The grapes for Auf dem Buberg Alte Reben come from old Silvaner vines rooted in the slopes of the Hessische Bergstraße, where a mix of loess, clay and limestone-influenced soils contributes to both ripeness and a distinctive mineral tension. The region’s sheltered, relatively mild climate allows for slow, even ripening, preserving aromatic finesse and natural acidity. Harvest is typically carried out by hand to ensure careful selection of healthy, optimally ripe bunches from the older parcels. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and fermented at controlled temperatures—most often in stainless steel and/or neutral large-format tanks—to preserve varietal purity, clarity of fruit and the expression of site. Extended time on fine lees adds texture and a subtle creaminess without overshadowing the wine’s precise, mineral structure.

Food & Serving
This old-vine Silvaner is a superb companion to delicately flavored yet savory dishes: think freshwater fish (trout, zander), sushi and sashimi, simple poultry, white asparagus, spring vegetables, light pasta or risotto with herbs, and mild goat or soft cow’s milk cheeses. It also works beautifully with classic German dishes featuring asparagus, potatoes and light sauces, where its herbal and mineral profile really shines. Serve well chilled but not icy, ideally around 8–10 °C, to let the aromatics unfurl without muting the texture. A brief splash-decant or 10–15 minutes in the glass is sufficient; the wine does not require extended decanting but will open up nicely with a little air.

Producer
Dr. Eric Barnert & Götz Drewitz GbR is a quality-focused partnership in the Hessische Bergstraße, one of Germany’s smallest and most charming wine regions. Working on select hillside sites, they put strong emphasis on site expression, sustainable vineyard work and careful, minimalist handling in the cellar. Their Silvaner bottlings, particularly from old vines like Auf dem Buberg, have become local benchmarks for the variety, showing just how refined and terroir-driven this often underrated grape can be. Through meticulous attention to detail and a clear focus on freshness, precision and authenticity, Barnert & Drewitz contribute to the growing reputation of the Hessische Bergstraße as a source of distinctive, characterful German whites.
