Description
Baricci Nello Rosso di Montalcino 2012 is a refined, authentic expression of Sangiovese Grosso from one of Montalcino’s most esteemed hillsides: Montosoli. This Rosso bridges the gap between easy-drinking charm and serious structure, offering both immediate pleasure and the depth to reward a few more years of cellaring. Crafted in a traditional style with a light touch of large Slavonian oak, it captures the essence of Baricci’s high-altitude vineyards and the classic 2012 vintage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2012 vintage shows a luminous ruby red core with emerging brick-orange rims, reflecting its graceful evolution in bottle. The nose is expressive and layered, offering ripe sour cherries and wild raspberries, followed by dried rose petals, wild Tuscan herbs, a hint of leather and subtle spice from its time in large oak casks.
On the palate, this Rosso di Montalcino is medium-bodied, juicy and finely poised, with a vibrant acidity that keeps the wine lively and mouthwatering. Silky yet present tannins frame flavors of red cherries, cranberry, rosehip and a touch of orange peel, evolving towards leather, tobacco leaf and a discreet mineral edge on the finish. At this stage, the wine is in a beautiful drinking window, displaying harmonious maturity while retaining freshness. It can continue to develop more tertiary notes—dried flowers, forest floor and savory nuances—over the next few years if stored well.
Production
All the fruit for Baricci Nello Rosso di Montalcino 2012 comes from the Montosoli hill, a north-facing, high-altitude cru known for its marly, limestone-rich soils that give Sangiovese precision, fragrance and notable minerality. The vineyards are farmed conventionally but with a strong focus on low yields and careful canopy management to ensure optimal ripening, especially in a classic year like 2012 with good diurnal temperature swings. Grapes are harvested by hand at peak maturity, sorted meticulously, and fermented in traditional cement tanks to preserve purity of fruit and terroir transparency. The wine then matures for around 12–18 months in large Slavonian oak casks, followed by bottle aging before release, allowing the components to knit together without heavy oak imprint.
Food & Serving
This Rosso di Montalcino is a natural partner for Tuscan cuisine and elegant, savory dishes. It pairs beautifully with ragù-based pastas, pappardelle with wild boar, roasted lamb, veal cutlets, mushroom risotto, grilled pork chops and aged semi-hard cheeses like Pecorino Toscano. Serve at 16–18 °C to highlight both its aromatic complexity and vibrant acidity. Decanting for 30–45 minutes is recommended to fully open the bouquet and soften the tannins, especially if the bottle has been resting in cellar conditions.
Producer
Baricci is one of the historic, benchmark estates of Montalcino, founded by Nello Baricci, a pioneer who was among the first to recognize the unique potential of the Montosoli hill. As a founding member of the Brunello di Montalcino consorzio, Baricci has long been associated with classically styled, terroir-driven Sangiovese that privileges elegance over power. The family-run winery continues to work exclusively with estate fruit from Montosoli, producing wines that are highly regarded among traditionalists for their purity, balance and age-worthiness. Over the decades, Baricci has earned a reputation as a reference point for both Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino, consistently showcasing the finesse and character that have made this corner of Tuscany world-famous.
