Description
Baricci Nello Brunello di Montalcino 2017 is a textbook expression of classic Tuscan elegance, drawn entirely from the famed Montosoli hill, one of Montalcino’s most revered crus. Crafted from 100% Sangiovese Grosso and aged in large Slavonian oak casks, this magnum bottling combines depth, energy, and a refined, old-school Brunello character. Despite the warmth of the 2017 vintage, Baricci has captured a beautiful balance between ripe fruit, freshness, and terroir-driven nuance.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Brunello shows a luminous ruby garnet hue, lightly transparent at the rim, signaling both varietal purity and traditional craftsmanship. The nose is lifted and complex, with aromas of ripe Morello cherries, wild strawberries, dried herbs, tobacco leaf, and a hint of balsamic, layered with subtle notes of leather, forest floor, and warm spices.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with a poised, classical structure. Silky but present tannins are framed by vibrant acidity, keeping the wine fresh despite the richness of the vintage. Flavors of red cherry, plum skin, dried rose, savory spice, and underbrush unfold gradually, leading into a long, persistent finish with touches of balsamico, leather, and earthy minerality. The 2017 is approachable relatively early for Brunello, yet in magnum it offers excellent aging potential, comfortably evolving over 10–15 years from the harvest and gaining further complexity with time in the cellar.
Production
Baricci’s Brunello 2017 comes exclusively from the Montosoli hill, a historic cru north of Montalcino known for its mix of calcareous and schistous soils that lend precision, tension, and aromatic lift to Sangiovese Grosso. The vines are farmed sustainably with low-intervention methods, and the grapes are harvested by hand to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection—especially important in a warm, dry year like 2017. Fermentation takes place using traditional methods in cement tanks, encouraging a gentle extraction and preserving the purity of fruit and terroir expression. The wine then spends approximately 36 months in large Slavonian oak casks (no barrique), a classic Montalcino approach that favors finesse, authenticity, and slow, harmonious integration of tannin and flavor before bottling in magnum.
Food & Serving
This Brunello is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes: braised beef or lamb, slow-cooked ragù, game such as wild boar or venison, and earthy, mushroom-based recipes all play beautifully with its structure and complexity. Mature hard cheeses and well-aged pecorino also make an excellent match. Serve at 16–18 °C to highlight both the aromatic detail and the wine’s freshness; in magnum format, it benefits from a bit of air—decant for 1–2 hours if enjoyed in its youth to allow the aromatics and tannins to fully unfurl.
Producer
Baricci is one of Montalcino’s historic family estates, long regarded as a benchmark for traditional, terroir-driven Brunello. Based on the celebrated Montosoli hill, the winery was among the early champions of this cru, helping to cement its reputation as one of the most distinctive and high-quality sites in the appellation. Known for their steadfast commitment to classic methods—hand harvesting, cement fermentation, and aging in large Slavonian oak—Baricci consistently produces wines that are both authentic and ageworthy, earning the respect of Brunello enthusiasts and critics who seek elegance, balance, and a genuine sense of place.
