Description
Baricci Nello Brunello 1997 comes from one of the historic small producers of Montalcino, crafted on the prized Montosoli hill in the northern part of the appellation. With roots going back to the 1950s and a long-standing commitment to traditional Brunello making, this is a wine that reflects both place and heritage in equal measure.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, expect the evolved depth typical of mature Brunello, with garnet tones and likely some brick fading at the rim. The bouquet should offer layered aromas of dried cherry, plum, leather, tobacco, earth, and subtle spice, with the Montosoli site often lending remarkable finesse and structure.
On the palate, this should be a savory, beautifully aged Sangiovese Grosso with bright acidity, refined tannins, and complex secondary notes developing alongside the fruit. The finish is likely long and contemplative, with the 1997 vintage offering enough structure to remain expressive, while the wine’s current drinking window should be at or near maturity.
Production
The Baricci estate sits on the Montosoli hillside at around 280 meters above sea level, where the soils and exposition have long been considered among the finest for Brunello di Montalcino. Grapes are harvested entirely by hand and carefully selected before reaching the cellar, then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks with a relatively short maceration to preserve purity and aromatics. The wine is aged traditionally in Slavonian oak casks for at least three years, followed by eight months of bottle aging before release.
Food & Serving
This Brunello is an excellent match for richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, game, wild boar ragù, and aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16-18°C, and consider decanting for 1-2 hours to help open the wine and soften its mature tannins, especially if the bottle has been resting for many years.
Producer
Nello Baricci founded the estate in 1955 after the family purchased Colombaio Montosoli, and the winery quickly became one of the quiet pillars of Brunello’s rise to international recognition. Baricci was among the founding members of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino in 1967, helping protect and promote the appellation at an early stage. Today, the family name is carried forward by the third generation, Federico and Francesco, continuing a legacy built on tradition, precision, and deep local pride.
