Description
Barbacan Sol 2020 is a characterful Alpine red from the steep terraces of Valtellina in Lombardy, crafted primarily from Chiavennasca – the local name for Nebbiolo – with small amounts of Rossola and Chiavennaschino. It captures the sun-drenched, high-altitude vineyards of the valley in a wine that feels both delicate and deeply expressive. This cuvée highlights the finesse and energy that have made Barbacan one of the most talked‑about small producers in northern Italy.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Sol 2020 shows a luminous, pale to medium ruby color with garnet flashes at the rim – classic for mountain Nebbiolo. The nose is lifted and precise, offering red cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry, alongside rose petals, alpine herbs and a gentle whiff of spice and crushed stone.
On the palate, the wine is vibrant and linear, with fine, chalky tannins and a taut backbone of acidity that speaks clearly of its cool Alpine origin. Flavors of red currant, sour cherry and pomegranate are layered with hints of dried flowers, citrus peel and subtle savory notes. The finish is long, pure and mouthwatering rather than heavy, making it as suited to the table as to quiet contemplation. While already very enjoyable in its youth, Sol 2020 has the structure to evolve gracefully for another 5–8 years, gaining complexity and tertiary nuances with time in bottle.
Production
Barbacan farms traditional terraced vineyards on the rocky slopes of Valtellina in Lombardy, where thin mountain soils, dramatic diurnal shifts and constant breezes give naturally low yields and high aromatic intensity. The grapes for Sol are typically harvested by hand due to the steepness of the sites and carefully sorted to ensure only healthy, ripe bunches are used. In the cellar, Barbacan follows a restrained, artisanal approach: spontaneous fermentations with native yeasts, gentle extraction to preserve finesse, and maturation in neutral vessels (such as large old oak or inert tanks) so that the purity of Chiavennasca and its local companions, Rossola and Chiavennaschino, can shine through. Interventions and additions, including sulfur, are kept to a minimum, resulting in a wine that is a clear reflection of its origin.
Food & Serving
Sol 2020 is a versatile food wine that pairs beautifully with dishes that echo its Alpine heritage. Try it with mushroom risotto, braised rabbit, roast poultry, cured meats, or lighter game such as venison carpaccio; it also works well with firm Alpine cheeses and truffle‑accented dishes. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight its aromatic detail and fine structure. A brief decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended to allow the wine to open up and fully express its floral, herbal and mineral nuances.
Producer
Barbacan is a small, family-run estate in Valtellina that has gained a cult following for its expressive, low‑intervention interpretation of Chiavennasca. Working on centuries‑old dry‑stone terraces carved into the mountain slopes, the estate plays an important role in preserving both the landscape and the heritage of Nebbiolo in one of its most distinctive homes. Barbacan’s commitment to traditional farming, manual vineyard work and minimal manipulation in the cellar has positioned it at the forefront of the new wave of Alpine Italian producers, with wines that are increasingly sought after by sommeliers and enthusiasts who value precision, authenticity and sense of place.
