Description
Banfi Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle Mura 2019 is a refined expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s most celebrated crus. Crafted from estate vineyards surrounding the historic Poggio alle Mura Castle, this Brunello combines modern precision with classic Tuscan character. The 2019 vintage is already showing impressive depth and elegance, with the structure to evolve beautifully in the cellar.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Poggio alle Mura 2019 is a deep, vibrant ruby with garnet highlights at the rim. The nose is complex and layered, offering aromas of ripe dark cherry, plum and black raspberry, interwoven with notes of dried rose, tobacco leaf, leather, sweet spices, and a subtle hint of balsamic and Mediterranean herbs.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied yet finely poised Brunello, with silky, well-integrated tannins and a core of pure, juicy Sangiovese fruit. Flavors of red and black cherry, wild berries and blood orange are framed by nuances of cocoa, cedar, licorice and a distinct savory, earthy undertone. The acidity is vibrant and refreshing, stretching the flavors into a long, persistent finish with lingering notes of spice and minerality. While already approachable with some aeration, this 2019 has excellent aging potential; it will continue to develop greater complexity and tertiary nuances over the next 10–15 years and beyond under proper cellar conditions.
Production
Poggio alle Mura is sourced from meticulously selected Sangiovese vineyards that encircle the medieval Castello Banfi in southern Montalcino, where a mix of galestro (marl), sandstone and limestone-rich soils contribute both power and finesse. The vines benefit from the warm Tuscan sun, cooling breezes and significant diurnal temperature shifts that help preserve acidity and aromatic intensity. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with rigorous selection in the vineyard and at the winery. Banfi employs a careful vinification process, often using temperature-controlled fermentations and a combination of traditional and modern techniques to extract color, aroma and tannin gently. The wine is then aged in a thoughtful mix of large casks and smaller oak barrels, allowing it to develop structure and complexity while respecting the purity of Sangiovese and the character of the Poggio alle Mura terroir.
Food & Serving
This Brunello is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, braised beef, lamb shank, wild boar ragù, and game birds, as well as aged Tuscan Pecorino and other hard cheeses. It also shines alongside mushroom-based dishes and truffle-infused cuisine, which echo its earthy, savory notes. Serve at 18–20°C (64–68°F) in large Bordeaux or Burgundy-style glasses to allow the bouquet to fully open. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to soften the tannins and reveal the wine’s full aromatic complexity.
Producer
Banfi is one of Tuscany’s most influential and pioneering estates, founded in the late 1970s by the Mariani family with a vision to elevate Brunello di Montalcino on the world stage. Centered around the beautifully restored Castello Banfi near Montalcino, the estate has become a benchmark for research-driven viticulture and quality-focused winemaking in the region. Banfi played a leading role in the clonal selection and understanding of Sangiovese, helping to shape the modern style and global reputation of Brunello. The Poggio alle Mura vineyards are among Banfi’s flagship crus, and wines from this site regularly receive top critical acclaim, underscoring the estate’s significance as a standard-bearer for premium Tuscan reds.
