Description
Avignonesi Vin Santo di Montepulciano 2010 is a quintessential Tuscan dessert wine, crafted in tiny quantities and aged with almost obsessive care. This half bottle (0.375L) is a concentrated expression of tradition, time and terroir, offering a richly textured, meditative wine rather than a simple sweet treat. Each cask develops its own personality, making every release a unique snapshot of Avignonesi’s historic vinsantaia.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2010 Vin Santo di Montepulciano shows a deep amber to topaz hue, with copper and golden highlights that hint at its long, oxidative aging. The nose is intensely layered: dried apricots, figs and dates intertwine with candied orange peel, toasted hazelnuts, honey, crème brûlée and a whisper of spice and incense, all underpinned by a gentle oxidative nuttiness.
On the palate, this Vin Santo is dense, velvety and powerful, yet not cloying. Flavors of dried stone fruits, caramelized citrus, acacia honey, roasted almonds and walnut are lifted by a vibrant, almost surprising acidity that gives the wine shape and length. A subtle savory note—reminiscent of tea leaves and baking spices—adds complexity to the long, warming finish. This 2010 vintage has decades of life ahead; properly stored, it can age and evolve gracefully for 20+ years, becoming even more complex and harmonious.
Production
The grapes—Grechetto, Malvasia and Trebbiano Toscano—are sourced from Avignonesi’s estate vineyards in Montepulciano, where the rolling Tuscan hills, warm days and cooling breezes help develop both sugar concentration and aromatic finesse. After harvest, the bunches are carefully hand-selected and traditionally dried on mats or racks in well-ventilated lofts, concentrating sugars and flavors over several months. The semi-dried grapes are then gently pressed, and the dense must is transferred to small wooden casks (caratelli), often of different woods and ages, and left to ferment and mature slowly in the vinsantaia. This long, oxidative aging—typically many years in cask—allows each barrel to develop its own color, texture and aromatic profile, which are then blended to create a Vin Santo that is unmistakably Avignonesi and unmistakably Tuscan.
Food & Serving
Avignonesi Vin Santo di Montepulciano is a classic companion to almond biscotti (cantucci), blue cheeses like Gorgonzola or Roquefort, aged Parmigiano Reggiano and nut-based desserts such as almond tart, hazelnut cake or pecan pie. It also shines on its own as a contemplative after-dinner wine. Serve slightly cool, around 12–14°C (54–57°F), to balance freshness and aromatic intensity. A brief decant—15 to 20 minutes in a small carafe or simply allowing the wine to open in the glass—can help its complex bouquet fully unfold.
