Description
Bottled in an impressive magnum format, Ausone 2018 is a monumental Saint-Émilion that captures the very essence of Right Bank Bordeaux at its most refined and age‑worthy. A blend of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot, it marries power with haunting perfume and remarkable precision. As one of Bordeaux’s most revered estates, Ausone has a long history of producing wines that are both intellectually complex and sensually compelling, and the 2018 vintage stands proudly in that lineage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Ausone 2018 shows a deep, opaque garnet-purple hue, signalling its concentration and youth. Initially quite reticent on the nose, it unfurls slowly with air, revealing a layered and seductive bouquet of ripe black cherries, wild blueberries and plum compote. Behind the fruit lie more intricate tones of candied violets, molten dark chocolate, licorice, crushed stone, cedar shavings and a delicate graphite note.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with 14.5% alcohol, yet perfectly poised and never heavy. The texture is tightly coiled and fine-grained, with polished tannins that wrap around rich black and blue fruit at the core. As the wine opens, the fruit gives way to a complex, almost cerebral interplay of earth, mineral and floral notes, carried by a vibrant, well-judged acidity. The finish is extraordinarily long, resonant and precise, leaving an impression of depth, tension and energy that lingers for minutes. This is a wine built for the long haul, with formidable aging potential; in magnum, it should easily evolve and gain nuance over 30–40 years or more, rewarding patience with ever greater aromatic and textural complexity.
Production
Ausone sits on a dramatic limestone and clay slope above the town of Saint‑Émilion, a terroir famed for its sheer rock outcrops, well-drained soils and cooling influence that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavour. The old-vine Cabernet Franc and Merlot are typically harvested by hand in small, carefully sorted lots to ensure only pristine fruit reaches the cellar. Vinification at Ausone is highly precise and traditionally minded: the grapes are fermented in small temperature‑controlled vats, often with a parcel-by-parcel approach to preserve the character of each micro‑terroir, followed by élevage in a high proportion of new French oak barrels. Extended aging in barrel and then in bottle allows the wine’s dense fruit, mineral backbone and structural elements to knit together into the seamless, layered expression seen in the 2018 vintage.
Food & Serving
Ausone 2018 is a contemplative wine that shines alongside refined, flavourful dishes rather than simple fare. Think roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, slow‑braised beef short ribs, venison or other game birds, or classic French preparations such as tournedos Rossini or veal with morels. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes and mature, hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and balance. Given its youth and structure, decanting is strongly recommended: in magnum, consider 2–3 hours of decanting today to allow the nose and palate to fully blossom, with less aeration needed as it enters full maturity.
Producer
Château Ausone is one of the crown jewels of Saint‑Émilion, long regarded as one of Bordeaux’s greatest estates and historically classified at the very top tier of the appellation. Named in homage to the Roman poet Ausonius, who is believed to have owned vineyards in the area, the château occupies an exceptional hillside site overlooking the medieval village. Over the centuries, Ausone has become synonymous with Cabernet Franc‑driven, limestone‑infused wines of immense depth, elegance and longevity. Its limited vineyard holdings and meticulous, often artisanal approach to viticulture and winemaking result in tiny production, making each vintage both highly coveted and closely followed by collectors and critics worldwide. The 2018 release continues this legacy, standing as one of the standout wines of an already celebrated Bordeaux vintage.
