In the glass, 2018 Ausone is a deep, almost opaque granat-purple, hinting at its remarkable concentration and youth. The nose is initially reticent and tightly coiled, demanding time and air before it unfurls into a hauntingly complex bouquet of ripe black cherries, wild blueberries and plum compote. With patience, layers of candied violets, molten dark chocolate, licorice, crushed stone, cedar shavings and a faint graphite note emerge, revealing the wine’s aristocratic structure and limestone pedigree. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied yet extraordinarily poised, with 14.5% alcohol carried on a spine of vibrant, finely etched acidity. The black and blue fruits are deep and perfectly ripe, wrapped in ultra-fine, chalk-dusted tannins that feel both luxurious and firmly architectural. A subtle, cerebral earthiness and a pronounced mineral streak build through the mid-palate, leading to an exceptionally long, reverberating finish that seems to echo with spice, stone and dark fruit. Production
Château Ausone sits on a dramatic limestone and clay amphitheatre just outside the town of Saint-Émilion on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, a terroir famed for imparting finesse, freshness and a distinctive mineral signature. The estate’s old vines of Cabernet Franc and Merlot are planted on steep, terraced slopes and are meticulously tended, with low yields and careful selection to ensure only the finest fruit enters the grand vin. Harvesting is carried out by hand in small batches, parcel by parcel, to capture optimal ripeness and balance. In the cellar, the grapes are vinified in temperature-controlled vats with great attention to gentle extraction, preserving purity and aromatic detail. The wine is then aged in a high proportion of new French oak barriques, where it slowly integrates structure, oak and fruit into the seamless, layered profile that defines Ausone, before being bottled in this rare 3 L double magnum format to further enhance its longevity.
