Description

Ausone 2014 in Double Magnum (3 L) is a rare, cellar‑worthy expression from one of Saint‑Émilion’s most revered estates. Crafted from 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot and matured 20 months in 85% new French oak, it marries precision, depth and graceful power. Presented in this large format, it offers both a spectacular centerpiece for the table and an even slower, more refined aging curve for collectors.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2014 Ausone is deep ruby with a vibrant, almost jewel‑like clarity that hints at both concentration and finesse. The nose opens slowly at first, then blossoms with mineral‑laced red berries, fresh currants and wild strawberries, intertwined with notes of oregano, orange blossom, graphite and a subtle hint of cassis pastille. With air, more complexity emerges: floral tones, crushed stone and fine spice from the oak. On the palate, this is medium‑bodied but beautifully intense, with ultra‑fine, filigreed tannins and a striking, sorbet‑like freshness that reflects the cool, balanced 2014 growing season. Layers of red and black fruits are framed by saline, chalky minerality and a long, very precise finish that feels both energetic and poised. In Double Magnum, the evolution will be particularly slow and elegant; expect a drinking window stretching comfortably from around 2025 through 2045 and beyond, gaining nuance, truffle and tobacco complexity with time.

Production
Château Ausone sits on Saint‑Émilion’s famed limestone plateau and steep terraces, where vines root deeply into fractured rock, giving the wine its hallmark tension, minerality and longevity. The blend of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot comes from meticulously tended, low‑yielding parcels, all harvested by hand in small crates to preserve berry integrity and sorted rigorously in the cellar. Fermentation takes place in temperature‑controlled vats, parcel by parcel, allowing for gentle extraction that respects the finesse of Cabernet Franc and the plushness of Merlot. The wine is then aged for about 20 months in 85% new French oak barrels, where it gains additional aromatic complexity, polish and structure without losing the purity and definition of its fruit.

Food & Serving
This refined Saint‑Émilion is a superb match for classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef tournedos, veal with morels, or duck breast with a red‑wine reduction. It also shines alongside truffle‑inflected recipes, game birds, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or old Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); for this Double Magnum format, decant 3–4 hours before serving in large Bordeaux stems to allow the wine to fully unfurl its aromatics and silken texture.

Producer
Château Ausone is one of Bordeaux’s most legendary names, long classified at the pinnacle of Saint‑Émilion as Premier Grand Cru Classé ‘A’. Its vineyards occupy some of the appellation’s most privileged limestone slopes and terraces, a site that has been associated with vine growing since Roman times and is often linked—at least in lore—to the poet Ausonius. In the modern era, Ausone has become a benchmark for age‑worthy, Cabernet Franc‑driven Right Bank Bordeaux, crafting wines that combine density with striking finesse. Its consistently high critical acclaim and limited production make each vintage, and especially large formats like this Double Magnum, highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs worldwide.
