Description

Ausone 2008 is one of the standout wines of its vintage in Bordeaux, a regal Saint-Émilion that marries power with haunting finesse. Often cited as a candidate for “wine of the vintage,” it reflects the extraordinary potential of its limestone terroir in a classic, cooler year. This is a wine crafted for long-term cellaring, delivering an almost architectural sense of structure and depth that will reward patience for decades.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Ausone 2008 is intensely concentrated, showing a near-opaque ink-black core with deep purple highlights that hint at its youth and density. The nose is complex and expressive: waves of wild blueberry and blackberry liqueur, crushed violets and spring flowers lift from the glass, layered with notes of truffle, camphor, graphite, and wet stone—an almost sculpted mineral edge that is a hallmark of Ausone. On the palate, the wine is at once powerful and refined, with a medium to full body that feels multi-dimensional rather than heavy. Dark berry fruit—blackcurrant, blueberry, and black plum—unfolds over a core of vibrant acidity and fine-grained but authoritative tannins. Subtle hints of licorice, cocoa, and savory spice appear with air, all leading into a soaring, skyscraper-like finish that lingers for a minute or more. Still youthful and tightly coiled, the 2008 has substantial aging potential: it is best given 5–8 more years in bottle from release and can comfortably evolve and improve over 40–50 years under proper cellaring conditions.

Production
Château Ausone sits on the limestone slopes above the town of Saint-Émilion, on one of the region’s most coveted terroirs: a mix of hard limestone and clay-limestone that naturally restricts yields and imparts a distinctive mineral line to the wines. The vineyard is planted largely to Cabernet Franc and Merlot, with old vines rooted deep into the rock, producing small, concentrated berries. Harvesting is done by hand, parcel by parcel, to capture optimal ripeness in this relatively cool, classic vintage. In the winery, grapes are carefully sorted, then vinified in small temperature-controlled vats to respect the character of each plot. The wine typically undergoes long macerations for depth and structure, followed by aging in a high proportion of new French oak barrels, where it matures on the fine lees, gaining complexity, polish, and that seamless integration of fruit, oak, and minerality that defines Ausone.

Food & Serving
Ausone 2008 is a contemplative wine that shines with refined, classically prepared dishes. Think roasted lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, venison or other game, and richly sauced poultry such as roasted pigeon or duck. Earthy accompaniments—truffles, wild mushrooms, root vegetables, and dishes featuring lentils or du Puy-style preparations—play beautifully with its mineral and truffle notes. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to preserve freshness and aromatic nuance. At present, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open and soften; older, well-cellared bottles (20+ years) will need more gentle handling and a shorter, careful decant to avoid disturbing the sediment.

Producer
Château Ausone is one of the most revered estates in Saint-Émilion, long classified at the very top level as Premier Grand Cru Classé A, a status shared by only a tiny handful of châteaux. Named in honor of the Roman poet Ausonius, who is believed to have owned vines in the area, the estate stands on a historic site where viticulture dates back many centuries. Its steep, terraced vineyards overlooking Saint-Émilion and its pure limestone bedrock have given Ausone a reputation for producing wines of remarkable longevity, elegance, and minerality. Under meticulous, small-scale stewardship, the château has consistently crafted some of the most sought-after and ageworthy wines of the Right Bank, with the 2008 vintage widely recognized as an especially successful expression of this legendary terroir.
