Description
Arroyo Ribera del Duero Gran Reserva 2015 is a deeply expressive Tempranillo that captures the power and elegance of Spain’s famed Ribera del Duero region. Crafted only in standout vintages and aged for extended periods in oak and bottle, this Gran Reserva is designed for those who appreciate nuanced, cellar-worthy reds. It offers a polished balance of mature complexity and vibrant fruit, making it a compelling choice for serious collectors and enthusiasts alike.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Arroyo Ribera del Duero Gran Reserva 2015 shows a deep garnet core with brick-red reflections at the rim, a visual clue to its careful aging. The nose is layered and refined, offering notes of ripe black cherry, dried plum, and blackberry compote, interwoven with tobacco leaf, cedar, leather, sweet spices, and a hint of cigar box and dried herbs.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet remarkably silky, with well-integrated tannins and a vibrant acidity that keeps it fresh despite its age. Flavors of dark berry fruit, dried fig, and blackcurrant are framed by mocha, vanilla, clove, and subtle balsamic undertones. The finish is long, savory, and persistent, with echoes of spice and fine oak. While already beautifully evolved and approachable now, this 2015 Gran Reserva still has several years of positive development ahead, offering aging potential in the range of 8–10 more years if stored properly.
Production
Sourced from vineyards in Castilla y León within the prestigious Ribera del Duero appellation, this Gran Reserva Tempranillo benefits from high-altitude sites, chalky-clay and limestone soils, and wide diurnal temperature swings that preserve acidity and aromatic intensity. Grapes are typically hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to ensure only the best clusters make it into the final blend. In the cellar, the wine undergoes a controlled fermentation to extract color, structure, and aromatics, followed by an extended maturation in quality oak barrels—often American and/or French—for several years, in line with strict Gran Reserva regulations. It then spends additional time aging in bottle before release, allowing tannins to soften and the bouquet to gain complexity and tertiary notes.
Food & Serving
This Gran Reserva is an excellent partner for rich, savory dishes such as roast lamb, slow-braised beef cheeks, ribeye steaks, game (venison, wild boar), and aged hard cheeses like Manchego or Comté. It also pairs beautifully with earthy mushroom dishes and truffle-infused preparations. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended to allow the wine to fully open, soften its tannins, and reveal its layered aromatics.
