Arnot-Roberts Syrah, Clary Ranch 2022

Arnot-Roberts’ Clary Ranch Syrah 2022 is a bright, cool-climate take on a grape that often leans powerful and heavy in California. Sourced from one of the region’s colder sites, it delivers lifted aromatics, restrained alcohol, and a more elegant, finely tuned expression of Syrah than you might expect. It’s a modern California red with a distinctly thoughtful, old-world sensibility.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep purple hue that hints at its concentration. The nose is layered with dark cherry, blackberry, boysenberry, violet, black pepper, cocoa, and dried spice, giving it both fruit depth and savory lift. The palate is concentrated yet beautifully balanced, with dark cherry and plum leading the way, followed by black pepper and a subtle touch of vanilla from the oak. It has freshness, structure, and enough energy to drink well now, though it should also hold up nicely over the next few years if you prefer Syrah with a little more development.

Production
Clary Ranch sits in a marginally cool site in California, where the long growing season allows the fruit to ripen slowly and maintain naturally lower sugar levels. Harvest came unusually late, in mid-November, helping preserve freshness and shape a more restrained style of Syrah. The wine was fermented with whole clusters and matured for 10 months in neutral French oak, allowing the vineyard character to remain front and center.

Food & Serving
This Syrah works especially well with grilled lamb, roast duck, mushroom dishes, charred vegetables, or a pepper-crusted steak. Serve it slightly cool, around 16–18°C, and consider a short decant if opening young to let the aromatics fully unfold.
