Description
Arnaldo Caprai Malcompare Pinot Nero 2019 is a rare and characterful expression of Pinot Noir from the hills of Umbria, far from the grape’s traditional strongholds. Born from a restless drive to experiment, it channels decades of research into matching this noble variety with an unexpected terroir. The result is a refined, deeply textured red that marries Italian warmth with Burgundian elegance, offering a striking new perspective on Pinot Nero.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Malcompare 2019 shows a luminous, medium ruby color with delicate garnet highlights at the rim, hinting at both purity of fruit and developing complexity. The nose opens with finely drawn aromas of wild cherries, ripe raspberries and pomegranate, layered with notes of rose petals, violets, subtle spice, and a whisper of fine oak—think cocoa powder, sandalwood and a touch of sweet tobacco.
On the palate, this is a poised and silky Pinot Nero, with a creamy, almost velvety tannin structure that never weighs the wine down. Juicy red berry fruit is framed by vibrant acidity, giving lift and precision to flavors of cherry, cranberry, blood orange and a faint savory note of tea leaf and forest floor. The finish is long, graceful and harmonious, suggesting excellent balance between fruit, structure and oak. Enjoyable now for its elegance and finesse, it has the concentration and structure to evolve beautifully over the next 6–10 years, gaining more tertiary notes of truffle, dried flowers and spice with time in bottle.
Production
Malcompare is sourced from carefully chosen hillside parcels in Umbria, where a mix of clay, limestone and well-drained soils, combined with marked day–night temperature swings, gives Pinot Noir both aromatic lift and structural depth. Yields are kept low through meticulous vineyard work and predominantly manual harvesting, with grapes picked at optimal ripeness to preserve freshness and varietal character. In the cellar, gentle destemming and a cold soak help extract delicate color and aroma before a controlled fermentation in temperature-regulated tanks. Maceration is tailored to respect Pinot Nero’s fine tannins, followed by aging—largely in French oak barriques and/or tonneaux—chosen to support, rather than dominate, the wine’s perfume and texture, and a period of bottle refinement before release.
Food & Serving
This elegant Umbria Pinot Nero pairs beautifully with refined yet flavorful dishes: think roasted guinea fowl, duck breast with cherries, veal scaloppine, porcini mushroom risotto or truffle-infused pasta. It also works well with charcuterie, medium-aged cheeses such as Taleggio or Fontina, and delicate game birds. Serve at 14–16 °C to highlight its aromatic complexity and silky texture. A short decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended for the 2019 vintage to allow the bouquet to fully open and the tannins to show their most supple, creamy side.
