Description
Argiano Brunello di Montalcino 2019 is a classic expression of Sangiovese from one of the region’s most historic estates, marrying depth, elegance and drinkability. This Brunello stands out for its generous dark fruit, supple texture and beautifully integrated oak that never overshadows the character of the grape. Crafted from organically grown, old-vine fruit in Montalcino, it continues Argiano’s long tradition of producing ageworthy yet approachable Brunello di Montalcino.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Brunello shows a deep, vibrant ruby core with garnet highlights forming at the rim, signaling both concentration and the first hints of development. The nose is inviting and layered, with aromas of ripe dark cherries, blackberries and plums, wrapped in notes of sweet spice, tobacco leaf, cedar and a touch of roasted coffee and cocoa from carefully judged oak aging.
On the palate, this is a full-flavored yet poised Brunello: juicy dark fruit and fleshy plum are balanced by fresh acidity and fine, persistent tannins that speak clearly of Sangiovese’s noble structure. Hints of licorice, dried herbs, leather and warm baking spices add complexity and length. The wine is already harmonious in youth, but the backbone of acidity and tannin suggests solid aging potential over the medium term—expect it to evolve gracefully over the next 8–15 years, gaining more tertiary notes of dried flowers, truffle and forest floor.
Production
Argiano’s Brunello di Montalcino 2019 comes from organically farmed vineyards in the southern part of Montalcino, where a mix of clay, limestone and galestro (crumbly marl) soils, combined with excellent exposure, gives both richness and tension to the Sangiovese. Some of the vines are up to 55 years old, naturally limiting yields and intensifying flavor. Grapes are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks with a focus on gentle extraction to preserve finesse. The wine is then aged in large oak casks and selected barrels, allowing the wood to frame the fruit with spice and structure without dominating, before bottling and further rest in bottle prior to release.
Food & Serving
This Brunello is a natural match for rich, savory dishes: think slow-braised lamb shanks, Tuscan-style bistecca alla fiorentina, wild boar ragù, game birds or aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano and Pecorino Toscano. Earthy mushroom risottos, truffle dishes and roasted root vegetables also play beautifully with the wine’s depth and herbal-spice complexity. Serve at 17–18°C; if enjoyed young, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the tannins to soften and the bouquet to open fully. Older bottles will need a gentler, shorter decant—just enough to separate the wine from any sediment.
Producer
Argiano is one of the historic names of Montalcino, with roots that reach back to the 16th century and a long-standing reputation for producing benchmark Sangiovese wines. The estate played a key role in establishing Brunello di Montalcino as one of Italy’s great red wines, helping to define the style that has earned the appellation worldwide acclaim. Today, Argiano combines tradition—large cask aging, respect for terroir, and a focus on Sangiovese—with modern attention to vineyard management and certified organic practices. Regularly praised by international critics and collectors, Argiano’s Brunello remains a reference point in Tuscany for its balance of depth, elegance and authenticity.
