Description

Argiano Brunello di Montalcino 2017 is a richly textured expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s most historic estates. This organic Brunello combines generous dark fruit and spice with the poise and structure that make the best wines from this denomination so ageworthy. Coming from some vines up to 55 years old and a warm, sunny vintage, it offers immediate appeal while still promising rewarding evolution in the cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino shows a deep ruby core with garnet highlights beginning to form at the rim. The nose is generous and enveloping, with ripe black cherry, dark plum and blackberry framed by notes of baking spice, licorice, tobacco, and roasted coffee from well-judged oak. Hints of dried herbs, leather and a subtle balsamic tone add further complexity. On the palate, this is a full and rounded Brunello with medium-plus fruit weight rather than sheer power, allowing its layered character to shine. Juicy dark fruit—plum, black cherry and a touch of fig—wrap around fine-grained tannins and a firm, vibrant acidity typical of Sangiovese. The spice and toasted oak tones are well integrated, lending warmth and depth without overwhelming the fruit. The finish is long, savory and slightly earthy, with lingering notes of cocoa, dried cherry and sweet spice. While already approachable, especially with some air, this vintage has the structure to evolve gracefully over the short to medium term, with an optimal drinking window over the next 8–12 years.

Production
Argiano’s Brunello di Montalcino 2017 is sourced from organically farmed vineyards on the southwestern slopes of Montalcino, where a mix of clay-limestone soils and galestro (marly schist) gives Sangiovese both richness and tension. The estate’s older vines—some up to 55 years of age—contribute naturally low yields and concentrated fruit. Grapes are hand-harvested parcel by parcel to ensure optimal ripeness, then carefully sorted before fermentation. Vinification typically takes place in temperature-controlled tanks, with a long maceration on the skins to extract fine tannins and aromatic complexity. The wine is then aged in large traditional oak casks (and a proportion of smaller barrels) for several years, allowing the oak spice and roasted notes to integrate harmoniously with the fruit, before further refinement in bottle prior to release.

Food & Serving
This Brunello is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb shanks, game birds, and hearty stews with porcini mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with aged Italian cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially in its youth, to soften the tannins, open up the dark fruit and allow the more subtle tertiary notes to emerge.

Producer
Argiano is one of the historic estates of Montalcino, with roots reaching back to the 16th century and a long tradition of quality winemaking in southern Tuscany. Over the decades, Argiano has become a reference point for Brunello di Montalcino, helping to shape the denomination’s reputation for structured, ageworthy Sangiovese. The estate has embraced organic viticulture and a more terroir-driven, balanced style, earning strong recognition from international critics and wine lovers alike. Alongside its flagship Brunello, Argiano is known for pioneering high-quality Supertuscans and for consistently producing wines that express both the power and elegance of Montalcino’s unique terroir.
