Description
Argentiera Poggio Superiore Red Bolgheri 2018 in magnum format is a powerful yet refined expression of the Bolgheri coast, crafted from Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drawn from some of the highest and closest-to-the-sea vineyards in the appellation, this is a ‘super Tuscan’ that marries ripe coastal richness with striking freshness and aromatic lift. The magnum bottling enhances its aging potential, making it ideal both for collectors and for the table on special occasions.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Poggio Superiore 2018 shows an intense yet bright ruby-red colour, with vivid clarity that hints at both concentration and finesse. The nose is layered and complex: ripe cherries and dark plums lead, followed by notes of almond, nutmeg, cracked black pepper and a delicate balsamic tone. As it opens, nuances of fresh mint, eucalyptus and cocoa powder emerge, adding depth and elegance.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied but beautifully balanced, with a core of juicy black and red fruits framed by fine-grained tannins. The spice and balsamic notes from the nose carry through, interwoven with hints of bitter chocolate and Mediterranean herbs. The finish is long, poised and very harmonious, leaving a lingering impression of freshness and polished structure. In magnum, this 2018 has excellent aging potential, comfortably evolving over 10–15 years, gaining further complexity and silkier texture with time in bottle.
Production
Tenuta Argentiera’s vineyards sit in a particularly privileged corner of the Maremma, at the same time the closest to the Tyrrhenian coast and the highest in the entire Bolgheri region, reaching around 200 metres above sea level. This unique combination of altitude, sea breezes and well-drained, mineral-rich soils—linked historically to old silver mines that gave the estate its name—creates a distinctive microclimate that favours slow, even ripening of Bordeaux varieties. Grapes for Poggio Superiore are typically harvested by hand in small crates, allowing strict selection in the vineyard and at the winery. After careful destemming and gentle crushing, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks to preserve aromatic purity while extracting colour, flavour and structure. The wine is then aged in quality oak (largely French barriques and/or tonneaux), where it develops its spice, texture and complexity before being bottled—here in magnum—to further refine prior to release.
Food & Serving
This Bolgheri red is a natural partner for rich, flavourful dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, roasted lamb, slow-cooked beef cheeks or game birds with herbs. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses, truffle dishes and mushroom-based pastas or risottos, which echo its earthy and balsamic notes. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight both its fruit and its structure. In magnum format, decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended to allow the wine to fully open and show its aromatic complexity.
Producer
Tenuta Argentiera is set like a painting into the rolling hills of the Maremma, overlooking the sea, the island of Elba and, on clear days, Corsica, with the vineyards of Bolgheri stretching out to the north. The estate takes its name from the historic silver mines (argento means silver in Italian) that once shaped the surrounding hillsides, and today stands as one of the key benchmarks for Bolgheri’s modern red wines. As the Bolgheri region transformed from a rosé stronghold into the home of world-class ‘super Tuscans’, Argentiera quickly earned a leading role, with its wines frequently praised by international critics and featuring prominently in top value and top score lists. The combination of maritime influence, elevation and attentive, quality-focused work in the vineyards and cellar has made Tenuta Argentiera a reference point for those seeking the pure coastal-Tuscan expression of Bordeaux varieties.
