Description

Argentiera Poggio Superiore Red Bolgheri 2018 in the impressive 300 cl format is a powerful expression of the Bolgheri coast, crafted from Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This is a deeply structured, collector-worthy Tuscan red that marries maritime freshness with opulent fruit and classic Bordeaux-style elegance. Its DOC Bolgheri pedigree and limited production make it a standout choice for special occasions and long-term cellaring.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Poggio Superiore shows an intense yet bright ruby red colour, hinting at both concentration and vitality. The nose is layered and complex, opening with ripe cherry and juicy plum, followed by nuances of almond, nutmeg, black pepper and a subtle balsamic lift. Fresh mint and eucalyptus bring a cooling, Mediterranean edge, while undertones of cocoa and fine spice add depth and sophistication. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, structured red with a finely tuned balance between ripe fruit, spice and freshness. Silky but firm tannins frame notes of dark berry, cherry and plum, supported by savoury hints of herbs and sweet baking spices. The finish is long, harmonious and persistent, with a pleasant, slightly balsamic aftertaste that invites another sip. In this 3-litre format, the wine evolves more slowly, giving it excellent aging potential: expect it to drink beautifully over the next 10–15 years, gaining additional complexity and integration with time.

Production
Tenuta Argentiera’s vineyards lie in a privileged corner of Maremma, in Bolgheri, combining proximity to the Tyrrhenian coast with some of the highest elevations in the appellation, reaching around 200 metres above sea level. The soils, shaped by ancient marine deposits and the area’s historic silver mines (argento meaning silver), provide excellent drainage and mineral tension, while sea breezes and wide diurnal shifts help the grapes ripen slowly and evenly. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with careful selection in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only the best clusters are used. Vinification follows a modern, estate-focused Bordeaux model: temperature-controlled fermentation, long macerations to extract colour and tannin, and subsequent maturation in quality oak barrels to build structure and complexity without overwhelming the wine’s natural elegance and freshness.

Food & Serving
This is a serious, gastronomic wine that pairs beautifully with rich, savoury dishes: think Tuscan bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb, game dishes, truffle-infused pastas and aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight the wine’s aromatic complexity and balanced structure. Given its youth and concentration, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially from this large 3-litre format, to allow the aromatics to unfurl and the tannins to soften into a seamless, polished texture.

Producer
Tenuta Argentiera is one of Bolgheri’s reference estates, dramatically set in the rolling hills of Maremma with sweeping views over the sea, the island of Elba and, on clear days, Corsica. The name recalls the historic silver mines that once characterised these hills, and the estate uniquely combines being the closest winery to the coast with some of the highest vineyards in the Bolgheri DOC. In a region made famous by the so‑called “Super Tuscans” and led into the global spotlight by wines like Sassicaia, Argentiera has quickly established itself among the key modern benchmarks. The winery has earned international acclaim, with highlights including its 2015 Poggio ai Ginepri red taking first place in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Values “Big Reds” in 2018, the 2015 Argentiera scoring 99 points from James Suckling, and the 2016 Donoratico receiving 95 points. Today, Tenuta Argentiera stands as a leading ambassador of Bolgheri’s potential, crafting refined, maritime-influenced reds of depth, precision and age-worthiness.
