Description
Antonelli Molino Dell'Attone Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG 2015 is a powerful, single-vineyard expression of Umbria’s flagship red grape, crafted from organically grown Sagrantino. This is a structured, ageworthy wine that shows the variety’s full depth while remaining precise and refined. Awarded the top rating of Tre Bicchieri (3 Glasses) in Gambero Rosso 2021, it stands among the elite Sagrantinos of Montefalco.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 Molino Dell'Attone shows a deep, intense ruby color with garnet hints starting to appear at the rim, signaling its evolution. The nose is complex and layered: ripe blackberry, black cherry and plum are woven with notes of dried violets, licorice, sweet spices, dark chocolate, leather and a gentle balsamic lift.
On the palate, this is full-bodied and authoritative, with the characteristic tannic backbone of Sagrantino polished by careful aging. Dark fruit flavors—blackberry compote, blackcurrant and morello cherry—are framed by savory notes of tobacco, roasted coffee, cedar and a touch of earth. The acidity is vibrant enough to keep the wine fresh and balanced despite its power. The finish is long, dry and persistent, with fine-grained tannins that promise a long life ahead. While already enjoyable with proper aeration, this 2015 has excellent aging potential and should continue to develop complexity for another 10–15 years, depending on storage conditions.
Production
Molino Dell'Attone comes from a dedicated single vineyard on the Antonelli San Marco estate in Montefalco, Umbria, where Sagrantino is grown on clay-limestone soils at moderate elevation. The estate is organically farmed, with careful canopy management and hand-harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes make it to the cellar. After an initial selection in the vineyard, bunches are sorted again upon arrival at the winery. Fermentation typically takes place with skin contact over an extended period, allowing for a slow, complete extraction of color, aroma and tannins. The wine then matures in large oak casks—often Slavonian—followed by additional time in bottle before release, a regime designed to soften Sagrantino’s robust structure and refine its aromatic profile without overwhelming it with new oak.
Food & Serving
This Sagrantino is a natural partner for rich, deeply flavored dishes such as braised lamb shank, wild boar ragù, slow-cooked beef, grilled steaks, and game (venison, hare), as well as truffle dishes and aged hard cheeses like Pecorino, Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) in large Bordeaux-style glasses to allow the aromas to unfold. Decanting is highly recommended—ideally for 1.5 to 2 hours—for the tannins to soften and the wine’s full complexity to emerge.
Producer
Antonelli San Marco is one of the historic estates of Montefalco, with roots in Umbria dating back to the 19th century and a long-standing commitment to expressing the character of Sagrantino and the local terroir. The estate has become a reference point for Montefalco wines, known for organic farming, careful vineyard management and a traditional yet precise winemaking style that favors large casks over aggressive new oak. Their wines regularly receive top accolades from Italy’s leading guides, with the Molino Dell'Attone Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG 2015 earning the coveted Tre Bicchieri in Gambero Rosso 2021, reinforcing Antonelli’s reputation as a benchmark producer in the region.
