Description

Antolini Amarone della Valpolicella Moropio 2021 is a powerful yet finely etched expression of classic Amarone from the hills of Marano di Valpolicella. Crafted exclusively from hand-harvested grapes grown in the single vineyard “Morópio”, it captures the village’s signature depth, warmth and savoury complexity. This is a richly structured red with the concentration to shine both at the dinner table and as a contemplative wine on its own.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Moropio 2021 shows a deep, dense ruby core with garnet reflections at the rim, hinting at its intensity and extract. The nose is generous and layered: ripe black cherry, dried plum and fig are woven together with notes of dark chocolate, sweet tobacco, dried herbs and a touch of balsamic spice, typical of the Marano area. On the palate, it is full-bodied and velvety, with rich, sweet fruit balanced by fresh acidity and firm but polished tannins. Flavours of cherry compote, blackberries and dates mingle with cocoa, licorice, roasted coffee bean and a subtle savoury note reminiscent of game and dried Mediterranean herbs. The finish is long, warming and persistent, with a pleasant bitter-chocolate twist that keeps it from ever feeling heavy. Enjoyable now with a good decant, this vintage has excellent aging potential and should evolve beautifully over the next 10–15 years, developing more tertiary notes of leather, dried flowers and forest floor.

Production
The Morópio vineyard lies in Marano di Valpolicella, one of the historic communes of the appellation, where calcareous and marl-rich soils, terraced hillsides and good diurnal temperature swings help deliver both ripeness and freshness. Grapes (Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Molinara) are harvested entirely by hand at optimal maturity, with careful selection in the vineyard to ensure only healthy, perfectly ripe bunches are used. As is traditional for Amarone, the fruit is then laid out in ventilated drying rooms for several months in the appassimento process, concentrating sugars, flavours and tannins. After a gentle pressing, fermentation proceeds slowly at controlled temperatures, followed by extended maturation in oak to integrate tannins, build complexity and polish the wine’s texture before bottling.

Food & Serving
This Amarone is an outstanding partner for robust, flavourful dishes: think slow-braised or stewed red meats, venison and other game, rich ragùs, ossobuco, grilled or roasted beef, and mature hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or aged Grana Padano. It is also a meditative wine that can easily be enjoyed on its own at the end of a meal. Serve at around 17–18°C (62–64°F); decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to allow the aromatics to open and the tannins to soften.

Producer
Antolini is a family-run estate based in the heart of Valpolicella, where they have built a reputation for precise, characterful interpretations of the region’s classic styles, from Valpolicella to Ripasso and Amarone. Working primarily with hillside vineyards in areas such as Marano di Valpolicella, the family focuses on expressing the nuances of each site through careful vineyard management and thoughtful, traditional winemaking. Their Amarone wines, in particular, are noted for combining richness and depth with balance and drinkability, making Antolini a respected name among Valpolicella producers and a reference point for those seeking authentic, terroir-driven Amarone.
