Description

Antinori Solaia 2000 is a benchmark Super Tuscan from one of Italy’s most celebrated estates, crafted exclusively from the famed Solaia vineyard in the heart of Chianti Classico. From a warm and generous vintage, this 2000 release offers a beautifully evolved expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc, now sitting in a superb drinking window. Combining depth, polish and Tuscan soul, it remains one of the most sought‑after wines in Italy’s modern fine‑wine canon.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Solaia 2000 shows a deep, concentrated ruby hue with subtle garnet reflections at the rim, a clear sign of its graceful bottle age. The nose unfolds in complex layers: ripe blackcurrants and blackberries, dark cherry, and plum are woven together with cedar, tobacco leaf, dark chocolate, graphite and sweet spices, supported by hints of vanilla and dried Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, this is full‑bodied and richly textured yet remarkably poised. The warm 2000 vintage brings generous, mature fruit wrapped in silky, well‑resolved tannins and a finely integrated, refreshing acidity. Flavors of cassis, blackberry and black cherry are joined by notes of cocoa, espresso, cigar box, leather and a touch of truffle, building into a long, persistent finish with real depth and nuance. The wine is drinking beautifully now, in what many consider its optimum window, but well‑stored bottles still have the structure and balance to develop further tertiary complexity over the next 5–8 years.

Production
Solaia 2000 comes from the Solaia vineyard, a prime hillside site lying side by side with the Tignanello vineyard in the heart of Chianti Classico. Planted at 350–400 meters above sea level with a southwest exposure, the vines sink their roots into soils rich in limestone and marl, a combination that delivers both ripeness and freshness, as well as a distinctive mineral backbone. Yields are kept deliberately low and the grapes are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure only perfectly ripe bunches are selected. In 2000, each variety—predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon (around 75%), with Sangiovese and a smaller portion of Cabernet Franc—was vinified separately in temperature‑controlled stainless steel tanks, with extended maceration to gently extract color, tannin and aromatics. After fermentation, the wines were transferred to 100% new French oak barriques, where they aged for approximately 18 months before blending and bottling, followed by at least a year of bottle ageing prior to release.

Food & Serving
With its depth, maturity and structure, Solaia 2000 is a natural partner for refined, flavorful dishes: think bistecca alla Fiorentina, slow‑braised lamb shank, roast beef with porcini mushrooms, or game such as venison with a red‑wine reduction. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano, and with rich dishes featuring truffle or dark, earthy sauces. Serve at 16–18 °C to highlight both aromatics and freshness, and decant the wine for about 1.5–2 hours before serving to allow full expression of its evolved bouquet; take care when pouring older bottles, as a natural sediment may be present.

Producer
Marchesi Antinori is one of Italy’s most historic and influential wine families, with roots in Tuscan viticulture dating back to 1385. Over more than six centuries, the Antinori family has been at the forefront of quality innovation in central Italy, and played a pivotal role in the birth and global recognition of the Super Tuscan category. Solaia, first produced in the late 1970s, quickly became one of the estate’s flagship wines, showcasing how international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon could thrive alongside Sangiovese on the best Chianti Classico hillsides. Regularly earning top scores and international acclaim, Solaia is now firmly established as one of Tuscany’s most iconic and collectible wines, embodying the Antinori philosophy of marrying tradition, terroir and modern precision.
