Description

Antinori Solaia 1999 is a benchmark Super Tuscan from one of Italy’s most revered producers, crafted only in the finest vintages. Sourced exclusively from the famed Solaia vineyard in the heart of Chianti Classico, this wine marries Tuscan soul with Bordeaux-inspired structure in a refined, ageworthy expression. The 1999 vintage is widely considered a classic year in Tuscany, yielding wines of freshness, precision and remarkable longevity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Solaia 1999 shows a deep, concentrated ruby red hue, now gently softening at the rim with graceful bottle age. The nose is complex and evolving, opening with blackcurrant and ripe dark cherry, followed by violets, graphite, cedarwood, and subtle notes of licorice, cocoa and sweet tobacco. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, beautifully structured wine, where the Cabernet Sauvignon provides backbone and depth, Sangiovese adds lift and freshness, and Cabernet Franc contributes aromatic nuance. Tannins are firm yet finely knit and mature, wrapped around a vibrant, refreshing acidity that keeps the wine lively and precise. Layers of dark fruit, spice and mineral undertones unfold across a long, persistent finish. At this stage, the 1999 vintage is in a superb drinking window, with tertiary notes emerging, yet it still has the structure to continue evolving gracefully for several more years under proper cellaring.

Production
The Solaia vineyard sits at 350–400 meters above sea level in the heart of the Chianti Classico zone, with a coveted southwesterly exposure that ensures excellent ripening. The soils are predominantly limestone and marl, lending the wine its characteristic mineral tension and complexity. Yields are deliberately kept low to maximize concentration and quality, and the grapes—approximately 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese and 5% Cabernet Franc—are hand-selected and vinified separately. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with an extended maceration to extract deep color, aroma and structure. After blending, the wine is aged for about 18 months in 100% new French oak barriques, followed by at least a year of bottle aging before release, allowing the components to harmonize and the oak to integrate.

Food & Serving
Solaia 1999 is a natural match for refined, richly flavored dishes: think dry-aged bistecca alla fiorentina, roasted lamb with rosemary, braised short ribs, or game birds with truffle. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or aged Pecorino Toscano. Serve at 16–18 °C, ideally in large Bordeaux-style glasses, and decant for 2–3 hours before serving to allow the mature aromatics to fully open and the texture to soften and expand on the palate.

Producer
Marchesi Antinori is one of Italy’s oldest and most influential wine families, with a history of winemaking that dates back to 1385. Based in Tuscany, Antinori has been at the forefront of the region’s quality revolution and played a pivotal role in the creation and global recognition of the Super Tuscan category. Solaia, first produced in the late 1970s, quickly became one of Italy’s most sought-after wines, regularly earning top scores and cementing its status as a modern icon. Through a blend of tradition, innovation and meticulous vineyard work, Antinori has helped redefine what Tuscan wine can be, placing both the estate and the region among the world’s elite wine producers.
