Description

Antinori Solaia 1998 is one of the defining wines of the Super Tuscan movement, crafted from a meticulous blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc grown on the famed Solaia vineyard in the heart of Chianti Classico. This vintage captures the elegance of a long, balanced growing season in Tuscany, delivering both concentration and freshness in a classically styled wine. First released in the late 1970s, Solaia helped rewrite the rules for Tuscan reds, and the 1998 stands today as a benchmark for age‑worthy, modern Italian winemaking.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Solaia 1998 shows a deep ruby core gently shading towards garnet at the rim, a clear sign of graceful maturity. The nose is complex and layered, opening with ripe blackcurrant, blackberry, plum and dark cherry, followed by evolved notes of cedarwood, cigar box, leather and dried violets. Subtle hints of graphite, tobacco, Mediterranean herbs and sweet baking spices add further nuance as the wine has time to breathe. On the palate, this is a full-bodied yet remarkably harmonious red, with silky, polished tannins and a finely woven, well-integrated acidity that keeps the wine lively despite its age. Flavours of blackcurrant, black cherry and ripe plum are framed by notes of licorice, dark chocolate, espresso and a touch of balsamic complexity. The finish is long, persistent and savoury, with tertiary nuances emerging in the glass over time. At this stage, the 1998 is in a beautiful drinking window for those who appreciate mature Tuscan reds and still has the structure to hold a few more years in a proper cellar, though it is best enjoyed over the near term to capture its full aromatic complexity.

Production
Solaia is sourced exclusively from the southwest‑facing Solaia vineyard within the historic Tignanello estate, at 350–400 meters above sea level in the Chianti Classico area. Here, well‑drained, stony, limestone-rich soils and optimal sun exposure contribute to the wine’s concentration, elegance and underlying mineral tension. Yields are kept deliberately low to maximize quality, and grapes are harvested by hand with careful bunch selection. In 1998, the fruit was gently destemmed and fermented in temperature‑controlled stainless steel tanks, allowing precise management of extraction and preserving aromatic purity. After alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged for around 18 months in predominantly new French oak barriques, adding structure, polish and layers of spice and toast without overwhelming the character of the fruit or the terroir.

Food & Serving
This mature Solaia is an outstanding partner for refined, richly flavored dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, roasted or grilled lamb, braised short ribs, game birds, or slow‑cooked beef stews with herbs and porcini mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano, and truffle-based dishes. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18 °C and decant gently 1–2 hours before serving to allow the wine to open fully and to separate it from any natural sediment that may have formed with age.

Producer
Marchesi Antinori is one of Italy’s most historic and influential wine families, with roots in Tuscan viticulture dating back to 1385. Over more than six centuries and 26 generations, Antinori has been a driving force in elevating the global reputation of Italian wine, particularly through its pioneering role in the creation of Super Tuscans.
