Description

Antinori’s Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino 1999 is a polished expression of Sangiovese from one of Tuscany’s most admired names. Combining the structure and longevity of Brunello with the finesse and balance for which Antinori is known, it stands out as a mature vintage from a renowned estate that helped shape modern Brunello’s reputation.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Brunello typically shows a deep garnet core with brick-red edges, reflecting its age and evolution. The bouquet is likely to be layered and refined, with notes of dried cherry, plum, rose petal, tobacco, leather, forest floor, and sweet spice, all developing toward a more savory, earthy profile with time. On the palate, the wine should be dry, medium to full-bodied, and beautifully structured, with the lively acidity and fine tannins that define Sangiovese. Expect flavors of dried red fruit, cedar, tea leaf, balsamic hints, and subtle mineral tones, finishing long and savory. While already mature, a well-stored 1999 vintage can still offer pleasure now, though its best drinking window is likely centered on the present rather than long-term aging.

Production
Pian delle Vigne is sourced from Antinori’s estate in the Montalcino area, where the warm Tuscan climate, hillside exposures, and well-drained soils support ripening while preserving freshness. The vineyards are planted entirely to Sangiovese, the traditional grape of Brunello, and are managed with an emphasis on quality and balance. Harvest is carried out by hand, with vinification designed to preserve the grape’s aromatic purity and structure, followed by aging in large oak casks, which helps maintain Brunello’s classical character without overwhelming the fruit.

Food & Serving
This mature Brunello pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, wild boar, game dishes, mushroom risotto, and aged cheeses such as Pecorino or Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C and consider decanting for about 30–60 minutes if the bottle has been well stored, especially to allow the aromas to open and any sediment to settle.

Producer
Antinori is one of Italy’s most historic and influential wine families, with roots going back more than six centuries. Today, the estate is widely respected for combining tradition, innovation, and meticulous vineyard work, and Pian delle Vigne has become an important expression of its Montalcino holdings. Antinori’s reputation for consistency and excellence has made it a benchmark producer in Tuscany and beyond.
