Ampelos Cellars, Pinot Noir Rho, 2020

Ampelos Cellars’ Pinot Noir Rho 2020 is the estate’s flagship Pinot Noir, crafted only from the finest fruit picked from its own vineyard in California. It brings together elegance, depth, and complexity, with the added distinction of being sourced from certified organic, biodynamic, and sustainable farming—an approach that reflects the producer’s commitment to quality and terroir.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this is a refined, expressive Pinot Noir with a polished, deeply colored appearance for the variety. Aromas of ripe strawberries and raspberries lead the way, supported by subtle layers of spice and oak from extended barrel aging. The palate is juicy yet poised, combining finesse with concentration and a long, structured finish. Its 30 months in French oak, including 50% new barrels, add depth and framing tannins without overwhelming the fruit. Unfiltered and unfined, the wine may show natural sediment, and it has the structure to develop beautifully over time.

Production
Rho is made entirely from 100% estate-grown Pinot Noir, assembled from several Pinot Noir clones chosen for their individual character. The grapes are harvested at low yields to preserve concentration, and the skins are punched down twice daily to extract optimal color, tannin, and aromatic complexity. The wine is then aged for around 30 months in French oak barrels, with half of those barrels new, before being bottled without filtration or fining.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile but serious Pinot Noir that pairs especially well with roast duck, herb-crusted lamb, wild mushroom dishes, and grilled salmon. Serve it slightly below room temperature, ideally around 15–17°C, and consider decanting briefly if opening the wine young, particularly to soften the natural sediment and allow the aromatics to open.
