Ampelos Cellars, Grenache Delta, 2021

Ampelos Cellars’ Grenache Delta 2021 is a beautifully expressive California Grenache that combines sun-ripened fruit with a polished, barrel-aged edge. Named after the Greek word for vine, “Delta” reflects both the grape’s character and the estate’s thoughtful approach to site-driven winemaking. Crafted from Peter Work’s own vineyards in Sta. Rita Hills, it’s a wine that shows why this cool-climate corner of California has become so compelling for Grenache.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Grenache shows a vibrant, fruit-filled profile with inviting aromas of ripe strawberries, a touch of rhubarb, and subtle hints of tobacco and spice from oak aging. The nose is generous and layered, yet stays fresh and precise. The palate is full and supple, with flavors of mature red fruit, black pepper, and a gentle oak presence that adds depth without overpowering the fruit. What stands out most is the balance and clarity on the finish, which is notably clean and persistent. While approachable now, it should also develop beautifully over the next several years.

Production
The grapes come from Ampelos’ own vineyards in Sta. Rita Hills, where the combination of warm days and a long growing season gives Grenache the time it needs to ripen fully while retaining freshness. The fruit is hand-harvested, destemmed on arrival at the winery, and begins fermentation in large vats after a few days’ cold soak. Natural fermentation lasts up to 16 days, followed by 33 months of aging in oak barrels, about one-third of them new and the rest previously used barrels from the estate.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile Grenache that pairs especially well with grilled lamb, roast duck, herb-roasted chicken, charred vegetables, or Mediterranean dishes with olives and tomato. Serve slightly below room temperature, ideally around 16–18°C, and consider a short decant of 30–60 minutes if opening young, to let the aromas fully unfold.
