Description

Alvina Pernot’s Puligny-Montrachet Chalumaux 1er Cru 2023 is a poised, finely etched white Burgundy that captures the stony, maritime elegance of Puligny at its best. Sourced from the high-sited Chalumaux premier cru, this cuvée stands out for its chiselled minerality and tightly woven structure, promising both early charm and serious aging potential. A relatively young label from a historic grower family, Alvina Pernot’s wines are already drawing critical praise, with this 2023 noted by critic Neal Martin for its seductive, intensely Puligny bouquet.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a pale straw to light gold hue with a silvery rim, hinting at its freshness and youth. The nose is quietly captivating rather than showy: crushed stone, wet flint, oyster shell and a cool, saline breeze are layered with delicate citrus, white flowers and a touch of fresh hazelnut. The mineral imprint is unmistakably Puligny, with that refined, marine edge Neal Martin highlighted. On the palate, the wine is precise and beautifully balanced, with a fine, needle-like line of acidity running through the core of ripe lemon, green orchard fruit and a whisper of stone fruit. There is notable tension between its creamy mid-palate texture and its vibrant, mouthwatering finish. The oak is more present at this stage (two new barrels out of six), bringing subtle notes of toast, spice and vanilla, but it is already integrating and will fold in gracefully with a few years’ bottle age. Enjoyable now with air, this 1er Cru should evolve wonderfully over 8–12 years, gaining complexity, depth and more nuttiness while retaining its mineral backbone.

Production
Chalumaux is a high, breezy premier cru on the slopes of Puligny-Montrachet in the Côte de Beaune, with thin, limestone-rich soils over marl that naturally yield wines of tension, salinity and fine-boned structure. Chardonnay vines here benefit from excellent drainage and a cooler exposition, which helps preserve acidity and aromatic detail even in warmer vintages like 2023. The fruit is typically hand-harvested in small crates to protect the berries, then gently pressed to capture clarity rather than power. Fermentation and élevage take place in French oak barrels, with a carefully judged proportion of new oak—here, two new barrels out of six—to add texture and complexity without overwhelming the mineral character. The wine is aged on fine lees, allowing it to gain subtle creaminess and depth while maintaining a tight, linear profile that is very much in the Puligny idiom.

Food & Serving
This Puligny-Montrachet Chalumaux 1er Cru 2023 is a natural partner for refined seafood and delicately prepared white meats: think oysters, scallops in beurre blanc, turbot or sole with a light butter sauce, lobster, roast chicken with morels, or veal in a cream and mushroom jus. It also pairs beautifully with fine goat’s cheese or aged Comté, where its minerality and acidity cut through richness. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight its precision and aromatic detail. In its youth, decanting for 30–45 minutes is recommended to help the oak integrate and allow the flinty, shell-like nuances to fully emerge.

Producer
Alvina Pernot is part of the celebrated Pernot family of Puligny-Montrachet, long respected for crafting some of the village’s most classical, terroir-driven whites. Building on the family’s deep roots and enviable holdings, Alvina has quickly established her own name, focusing on small-batch, meticulously farmed cuvées that showcase individual climats with clarity and finesse. Her approach combines traditional Burgundian savoir-faire—hand harvesting, gentle pressing, careful élevage in carefully selected oak—with a modern sensitivity to balance and freshness. In a short time, her wines have caught the attention of critics and collectors alike, reinforcing Puligny-Montrachet’s reputation as one of the world’s benchmark addresses for great Chardonnay.
