Description
Aldo Conterno Barbera d'Alba Conca Tre Pile 2022 is a refined expression of Barbera from one of Piedmont’s most respected estates. Sourced from a steep hillside in the famed Bussia Soprana area, this wine combines generous fruit with remarkable structure and poise. It brings together the richness and approachability of Barbera with the depth and seriousness usually associated with top Nebbiolo vineyards.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Conca Tre Pile shows a deep, vibrant ruby hue with youthful purple reflections at the rim. The nose opens with pure, expressive aromas of ripe red cherries, dark plums and blackberries, layered with violet, sweet spice, a hint of licorice and subtle, well-integrated oak tones.
On the palate, it is full-bodied yet finely textured, with Barbera’s trademark juicy acidity giving lift and energy to the rich fruit. Flavors of sour cherry, blackcurrant and raspberry coulis are wrapped in a velvety mouthfeel, supported by polished tannins and a long, savory finish with notes of cocoa, spice and a touch of balsamic. While already seductive in its youth, this vintage has the structure and balance to evolve beautifully over the next 6–10 years, gaining complexity and softness with time in the bottle.
Production
Conca Tre Pile is a well-exposed hillside (‘conca’ meaning basin) within Bussia Soprana, one of Barolo’s most prestigious crus, planted mainly to Barbera vines that reach up to 45 years of age. The combination of calcareous clay soils, elevation and excellent drainage yields naturally low yields and concentrated, characterful fruit. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested to ensure optimal ripeness and selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, traditional yet meticulous winemaking is employed: gentle fermentation and maceration to extract color and flavor without harshness, followed by maturation in oak (typically small barrels) to shape the wine’s structure and enhance its aromatic complexity, while preserving the purity and vibrancy of the Barbera variety.
Food & Serving
This Barbera d’Alba is exceptionally versatile at the table and pairs beautifully with rich pasta dishes such as tagliatelle al ragù, lasagne and mushroom risottos. It also complements roasted and grilled meats, game birds, charcuterie and aged cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino. Serve at around 16–18°C to highlight both the freshness and the depth of the wine. Younger bottles benefit from 30–60 minutes in a decanter to allow the aromas to unfurl and the texture to fully soften.
Producer
The Aldo Conterno estate, based in Monforte d’Alba, is regarded as one of the great names of Piedmont, renowned above all for its benchmark Barolo wines. Founded by Aldo Conterno after his departure from the historic Giacomo Conterno estate, the winery quickly earned a reputation for combining traditional philosophy with a precise, quality-driven approach in the vineyard and cellar. Working some of the finest crus in Bussia, the estate has played a key role in elevating the region’s global prestige. While Nebbiolo is the headline act, Aldo Conterno’s Barbera bottlings like Conca Tre Pile have become highly sought after for their depth, elegance and ability to showcase Barbera as a serious, ageworthy varietal in one of Italy’s most renowned wine regions.
