Description
Alain Voge Saint-Joseph Les Côtes 2019 is a supple, fruit-driven expression of Northern Rhône Syrah, crafted by one of Cornas’ most respected traditionalists. This cuvée is all about immediacy and pleasure, showcasing ripe dark fruit wrapped in silky tannins and gentle warmth. While the domaine is historically rooted in Cornas, this Saint-Joseph offers a more approachable, earlier-drinking side of the northern Rhône, without sacrificing character or authenticity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Saint-Joseph Les Côtes shows a deep ruby to purple hue with a youthful, vibrant rim. The nose is generous and inviting, with notes of caramelized black cherries, dark plum, and bramble layered over hints of brown sugar, baking spice, and a touch of violet and cracked black pepper. Subtle accents of cocoa, licorice, and smoked herbs add complexity without becoming rustic.
On the palate, it is full-bodied yet wonderfully supple, with smooth, rounded tannins and a plush, fruit-forward core. Ripe black cherry, blackberry compote, and blackcurrant drive the flavor, supported by gentle sweet spice, a hint of mocha, and a savory, stony undertone typical of the region. The finish is long, easygoing, and harmonious, making this wine particularly charming in its youth. Thanks to its structure and balance, it should drink beautifully now and over the next 4–6 years, offering peak enjoyment up to around 2025–2027.
Production
Sourced from selected parcels within the Saint-Joseph appellation, Les Côtes reflects the classic northern Rhône terroir of steep, well-drained granite slopes that favor Syrah’s aromatic intensity and freshness. The vineyards, cultivated with great respect for the environment, are largely worked by hand due to the incline, ensuring careful selection of healthy, optimally ripe grapes at harvest. After manual picking, the fruit is sorted, then traditionally vinified—typically with destemming or a balanced use of whole clusters depending on the vintage—followed by a maceration that extracts color, aroma, and fine tannins without harshness. The wine is then aged in French oak (often a mix of older barrels to avoid excessive wood imprint) to round the texture and knit the flavors, resulting in a polished, approachable style that remains true to its granite origins.
Food & Serving
This Saint-Joseph is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with herb-roasted lamb, grilled or braised beef, duck breast with a cherry or plum glaze, and classic French bistro dishes such as steak frites or confit de canard. It also works well with hearty stews, roasted root vegetables, mushroom dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Tomme de Savoie. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its fruit and spice. A short decant of 30–45 minutes helps the aromas fully open and softens the tannins further, though the wine is already quite accessible straight from the bottle.
Producer
Domaine Alain Voge is a benchmark estate in the northern Rhône, particularly renowned for its work in Cornas, where it helped elevate the appellation from near obscurity to global acclaim. Founded by the Voge family and developed significantly by Alain Voge from the 1950s onward, the domaine has long championed traditional hillside viticulture and meticulous craftsmanship. In recent years, it has embraced organic and biodynamic practices, further sharpening the precision and purity of its wines. While Cornas remains its spiritual home, the domaine’s Saint-Joseph bottlings, such as Les Côtes, showcase its ability to interpret neighboring terroirs with the same rigor and finesse. Frequently praised by international critics, Alain Voge is widely regarded as one of the reference producers of the northern Rhône, combining heritage with consistently high quality.
