Description
Alain Voge Cornas Vieilles Vignes 2020 is a powerful, old-vine Syrah from one of the most respected names in Cornas and the Northern Rhône. Sourced from several of the domaine’s best parcels, it marries deep concentration with lifted floral elegance and a distinct granitic minerality. This cuvée has long been a benchmark for ageworthy Cornas, and the 2020 vintage has already been praised as “reassuringly excellent” by Wine Advocate’s Joe Czerwinski.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Cornas Vieilles Vignes is deeply colored, almost opaque purple-black at the core, with a vibrant ruby rim hinting at its youth and intensity. The nose opens with lifted aromas of violets and wild flowers, followed by blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry, layered over notes of crushed stone, graphite, cracked pepper and a subtle whisper of oak.
On the palate, it is full-bodied, dense and powerful, yet remarkably poised. Ripe black fruits – cassis, blackberry and dark plum – are framed by firm, fine-grained tannins and a vivid line of acidity that keeps everything fresh and focused. Granite-driven minerality and savory tones of smoked meat, tapenade and spice emerge with air, while the oak (only around 15% new) sits in the background, adding texture rather than overt flavor. The finish is long, structured and tightly coiled, underlining its capacity to evolve. This is a wine built for the cellar; expect it to hit its stride after 6–8 years and to drink beautifully for 15–20 years or more in a good cellar.
Production
The Cornas Vieilles Vignes 2020 comes from old Syrah vines rooted in the steep, terraced slopes of Cornas, where decomposed granite soils (“gore”) give the wines their famed intensity and mineral backbone. The challenging topography demands painstaking manual work: vines are tended and harvested entirely by hand, with strict selection both in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes make it into the final blend. Parcels from different lieux-dits are vinified separately, typically with a high proportion of whole clusters to enhance aromatic complexity and structure, followed by fermentation in temperature-controlled vats. The wine is then aged in oak barrels, with only about 15% new oak, allowing the character of Syrah and its granitic terroir to shine through while gaining depth and polish during maturation.
Food & Serving
This structured, savory Cornas is a natural partner for rich, robust dishes such as slow-braised lamb shank, duck confit, venison stew, grilled ribeye, or game birds in red-wine sauces. It also pairs beautifully with charcuterie, hard or semi-hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda, and mushroom-based dishes that echo its earthy, smoky nuances. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. In its youth, decanting for 1.5–3 hours is highly recommended to soften the tannins and allow the floral and mineral notes to unfurl; as it ages, a gentler, shorter decant will help separate any sediment and open the wine gradually.
Producer
Domaine Alain Voge is one of the historic, reference-point producers of Cornas, instrumental in elevating the appellation from rustic obscurity to its current status as a source of some of the Northern Rhône’s most profound Syrah. Founded in the mid-20th century and developed under Alain Voge’s visionary leadership, the estate championed meticulous vineyard work and site expression at a time when many were focused on volume. Today, it is widely regarded as a standard-bearer for Cornas and Saint-Péray, with old vines on prime granitic slopes and a strong commitment to sustainable, often organic or biodynamic practices. Consistently lauded by international critics, the domaine’s wines – and especially Cornas Vieilles Vignes – are considered essential benchmarks for anyone serious about Northern Rhône Syrah.
