Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Vieilles Fontaines is opaque purple-black with a vibrant, inky core and a narrow, youthful rim. The nose is intense and layered: blackberries and blackcurrants mingle with blue fruits, rose petals, candied violets, bloody meat notes and a wild, savoury bouquet garni of thyme, rosemary and bay. With time in the glass, hints of cracked pepper, iron, smoke and dark olive emerge, underlining its Northern Rhône identity. On the palate, this is uber-rich, concentrated and massive, with a core of dark, ripe fruit wrapped in firm, abundant tannins. The structure is imposing yet balanced by fresh, energetic acidity, giving lift to the dense fruit and savoury, meaty undertones. The finish is long and powerful, echoing black fruit, florals and spice long after each sip. This 2020 is far from ready to drink: it demands at least 4–5 years of cellaring before opening, and under proper storage conditions it has excellent long-term aging potential, evolving gracefully over 15–25 years or more.

Production
Vieilles Fontaines is sourced from a single, historic parcel of Syrah planted around 80 years ago on steep, terraced slopes of decomposed granite in Cornas—an austere, mineral-rich terroir that naturally limits yields and produces intensely concentrated grapes. The vines are traditionally farmed and hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with rigorous selection in the vineyard and at the cellar door to retain only perfectly healthy fruit. Vinification follows classic Northern Rhône methods: whole or partially whole clusters are fermented with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse in spite of the wine’s power. The wine is then aged in carefully chosen barrels (often larger, older oak to avoid masking the terroir) for an extended period, allowing the tannins to refine and the complex aromatic profile to develop before bottling in very limited quantities.

Food & Serving
This is a serious, muscular Cornas that deserves equally robust cuisine. Think roast or grilled lamb with herbs, slow-braised beef cheeks, venison stews, game birds with wild mushrooms, or char-grilled ribeye. Rich, savoury dishes with rosemary, thyme, black olives or peppercorn sauces will echo the wine’s spicy, meaty character. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large-bowled glasses. In its youth, decant generously—2 to 3 hours at least—to help soften the tannins and open the bouquet; with extended bottle age, a shorter, careful decant to remove sediment will be sufficient.

Domaine Alain Voge is one of the reference estates of Cornas and Saint-Péray, credited with helping restore these once-overlooked appellations to international prominence. Founded in the mid-20th century and long led by Alain Voge himself, the domaine focused early on meticulous work in the steep, granite hillside vineyards and low-intervention winemaking that highlighted the character of Syrah and Marsanne from these singular sites.
