Description

Alain Jeanniard Quintessence Pinot Nero 2023 is a refined red Burgundy that captures the pure, vibrant character of Pinot Noir from one of the world’s most revered regions. Crafted in small quantities by artisan grower Jeanniard Alain, this cuvée focuses on precision, elegance and drinkability. The ‘Quintessence’ name reflects the estate’s aim to distill the very essence of Burgundy Pinot Noir into the glass, with an emphasis on clarity of fruit, finesse and terroir expression.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Quintessence shows a bright, translucent ruby hue with youthful purple reflections at the rim. The nose is fragrant and inviting, offering aromas of fresh red cherries, wild strawberries and raspberries, layered with hints of rose petal, crushed violets, subtle spice and a touch of forest floor that nods to its Burgundian origins. On the palate, this is a supple, medium-bodied Pinot Noir with fine-boned structure and lively acidity. Crunchy red fruit is at the core, supported by notes of cranberry, redcurrant and a touch of pomegranate, framed by delicate oak nuances such as gentle vanilla and a whisper of toast, if used. The tannins are silky and well-integrated, giving the wine a graceful, flowing texture and a clean, persistent finish with a mineral thread. While the 2023 is charming and approachable in its youth, it has the balance to develop additional complexity over the next 4–6 years, gaining more savory and earthy dimensions with short- to mid-term cellaring.

Production
Sourced from Pinot Noir vines rooted in classic Burgundian soils of limestone and clay, Alain Jeanniard’s Quintessence reflects the cool, temperate climate and nuanced terroir of Bourgogne. The vineyards are tended with great care, often using lutte raisonnée (reasoned viticulture) or similarly thoughtful, sustainable practices to preserve vineyard health and fruit purity. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, allowing for careful selection in the vineyard and at the sorting table. In the cellar, the fruit is typically destemmed (with a possible small proportion of whole clusters, depending on the vintage and stylistic choice) and undergoes a gentle, temperature-controlled fermentation to extract fine tannins and vibrant aromatics without heaviness. Aging takes place in a combination of stainless steel and French oak barrels, usually with a modest proportion of new oak, to respect the brightness and delicacy of the Pinot Noir while adding subtle structure and complexity.

Food & Serving
This elegant red Burgundy is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with roasted chicken, duck breast, pork tenderloin, grilled salmon, veal, and dishes featuring earthy mushrooms or root vegetables. It also complements mild to medium-soft cheeses such as Brie, Camembert, Tomme and washed-rind cow’s milk cheeses. Serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F) to highlight its aromatic precision and freshness. Young bottles can benefit from a brief 20–30 minute decant to open up the bouquet, though a gentle double-decant or simply allowing the wine to evolve in the glass will also reveal its layers.

Producer
Jeanniard Alain is a small, quality-focused producer based in Burgundy, a region that has set the global benchmark for fine Pinot Noir for centuries. Working at an artisanal scale, the domaine emphasizes attentive vineyard work, low yields and careful, minimally interventionist winemaking to allow each cuvée to speak clearly of its origin. Over the years, the wines have earned a following among Burgundy enthusiasts seeking authentic, characterful bottles that showcase finesse over power. Through cuvées like Quintessence, the estate underscores its commitment to crafting Pinot Noir with clarity, elegance and a strong sense of place, reinforcing Burgundy’s status as a reference point for the grape worldwide.
