Description

Agnanum Campi Flegrei Per'e Palumm 2023 is a pure expression of Piedirosso grown on the dramatic volcanic slopes just outside Naples. Sourced from steep vineyards beside the Astroni nature reserve, it captures the tension, freshness and mineral depth that make Campi Flegrei one of Italy’s most exciting coastal regions. Crafted with minimal intervention, this is a vibrant, characterful red that speaks clearly of its origin rather than of the cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Per'e Palumm 2023 shows a luminous ruby hue with a slight translucence typical of Piedirosso, edged with purple highlights that hint at its youth. The nose is immediately evocative of its volcanic home: wild red berries, sour cherry and pomegranate merge with notes of crushed rock, dried herbs, violets and a faint smoky, almost ash-like minerality. Subtle hints of spice and Mediterranean scrub add further complexity. On the palate, the wine is light to medium-bodied yet packed with energy. Juicy red fruits—cherry, raspberry and red currant—are framed by lively acidity and fine, chalky tannins. There’s a distinct salty, iron-tinged minerality that runs through the mid-palate, giving both grip and structure without heaviness. The finish is clean, tangy and persistent, with lingering notes of red fruit, herbs and volcanic stone. This vintage is best enjoyed in its youthful, aromatic phase over the next 3–5 years, when its vibrancy and savory edge are at their most expressive, though careful cellaring may reveal additional earthy and spicy nuances.

Production
The vines for Per'e Palumm are rooted in the uniquely volcanic soils of Campi Flegrei, a hilly amphitheater of ancient craters and ash deposits overlooking the Bay of Naples. These poor, mineral-rich soils, combined with the cooling influence of sea breezes and the steep slopes around the Astroni nature reserve, naturally limit yields and intensify flavor. The Piedirosso is cultivated at low yields and worked entirely by hand due to the vineyard’s pronounced incline, with a late harvest to ensure optimal ripeness and aromatic development. In the cellar, Agnanum follows a philosophy of ‘non-intervention’ vinification: fermentations proceed spontaneously with native yeasts, and the wine is handled gently, with minimal additions and no excessive manipulation. This approach preserves the grape’s delicate fruit, the salty-volcanic character of the terroir, and the authentic, unpolished personality of Campi Flegrei.

Food & Serving
Per'e Palumm 2023 is a brilliant table wine for classic southern Italian cuisine. Its fresh acidity and savory mineral core make it an ideal partner for tomato-based dishes like Neapolitan pizza, pasta al pomodoro, or eggplant parmigiana. It also shines with grilled or roasted white meats, pork, charcuterie, and simple preparations of oily fish such as tuna or swordfish, as well as dishes featuring mushrooms or roasted vegetables. Serve at 14–16°C (slightly cooler than many reds) to emphasize its freshness and aromatic lift. A brief 20–30 minutes in a carafe or simply opening the bottle in advance is sufficient to let the wine open up; extended decanting is not necessary and may dull some of its most delicate, floral notes.

Producer
Agnanum is a small, family-run estate in Campania that has become a quiet reference point for authentic Campi Flegrei wines. Working in an area shaped by millennia of volcanic activity, the estate focuses on native varieties such as Piedirosso and Falanghina, championing old vines and traditional methods. Their steep, terraced vineyards near the Astroni nature reserve demand meticulous manual labor, and the winery’s philosophy is firmly rooted in respect for nature: low yields, careful farming and minimal intervention in the cellar. Over the years, Agnanum has gained recognition among sommeliers and wine enthusiasts for bottlings that capture the raw beauty of Campi Flegrei—wines that are distinctive, saline, and deeply expressive of one of Italy’s most singular terroirs.
