Description
A. Christmann Spätburgunder Gimmeldinger Biengarten Erste Lage Bio 2018 is a finely etched German Pinot Noir from one of the Pfalz region’s most historic vineyards. Certified organic and crafted in a Burgundian-inspired, terroir-driven style, it marries elegance, precision and depth in a way that will appeal to both classic Burgundy lovers and explorers of top German Spätburgunder. The Biengarten site has been recognized as a top vineyard since at least 1828, and this Erste Lage bottling captures its long-standing reputation for finesse and complexity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Biengarten Spätburgunder shows a bright, translucent ruby to garnet hue, typical of finely made Pinot Noir, with a delicate, almost shimmering clarity. The nose opens with pure red cherry and wild raspberry, followed by hints of red currant, rose petals and dried herbs, layered with subtle notes of crushed stone, fine spice and a touch of smoky, toasted oak.
On the palate, this wine is poised and medium-bodied, with a finely knit structure and a clearly defined mineral backbone. Juicy red berry fruit is framed by vibrant acidity and sleek, polished tannins, giving the wine both grace and grip. Nuances of pomegranate, blood orange zest, forest floor and a gentle savoury spice unfold with air, leading to a long, precise and saline-tinged finish. While already one of the more approachable 2018 single-vineyard reds from Christmann, it still benefits greatly from aeration and will evolve beautifully over the next 8–12 years, gaining further complexity and silkiness.
Production
The Gimmeldinger Biengarten vineyard lies on steep terraces and slopes along the Haardt mountains in the Pfalz, facing east to southeast and sheltered from cold western winds in spring—conditions that historically allowed local beekeepers to set out their hives earlier, inspiring the name “Biengarten” (bee garden). Christmann’s Spätburgunder vines here were planted in 1983 in soils dominated by tertiary limestone marl, the so‑called Terra fusca, which gives the wines their fine, chalky minerality and tension. Farmed organically (and in practice according to biodynamic principles), the grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and carefully sorted. Vinification typically follows a gentle, Burgundian approach: partial whole-berry or whole-cluster fermentation with native yeasts, delicate extraction to preserve finesse rather than power, and maturation in small oak barrels (a modest proportion new) to shape texture and complexity without overwhelming the transparency of the site.
Food & Serving
This elegant Pfalz Spätburgunder pairs beautifully with refined dishes that echo its balance and subtlety: roast duck breast with cherry or red currant jus, veal or pork tenderloin, herb-crusted lamb, mushroom risotto, or grilled salmon and tuna are all excellent matches. It also works well with soft to semi-hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda or Tomme. Serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F) to highlight the wine’s aromatic precision and mineral line. Decanting for 1–3 hours is recommended in its youth to allow the bouquet to open fully and to soften the tannins; with additional bottle age, a shorter decant or simply serving from the bottle will suffice.
Producer
Weingut A. Christmann is a family-owned estate based in Gimmeldingen in the Pfalz, with a history that stretches back to the late 18th century and a reputation as one of Germany’s leading producers of dry, terroir-focused wines. Now led by Steffen Christmann—who has also served as president of the prestigious VDP growers’ association—the estate has been a driving force in elevating the status of Pfalz vineyards, including top sites like Biengarten, Idig and Ölberg. Christmann was an early adopter of organic and biodynamic viticulture in the region, aiming for wines of purity, precision and ageworthiness that faithfully express their origins. Their Spätburgunder, alongside their acclaimed Rieslings, consistently earns high critical praise and is considered a benchmark for finely structured, Burgundian-style Pinot Noir from Germany.
