Description
A. Christmann Riesling Idig Großes Gewächs 2023 is a benchmark dry Riesling from one of Germany’s most celebrated grand cru sites. Sourced from the iconic Idig vineyard in the Mittelhaardt, it combines crystalline precision with impressive depth and structure. This wine stands at the intersection of power and finesse, capturing the full character of its limestone-rich terroir in a remarkably pure, age-worthy style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Idig GG shows a pale to medium lemon color with a delicate green shimmer, signaling both youth and tension. The nose is finely etched and complex: expect aromas of lime zest, white peach, crushed herbs and wild flowers, layered with chalky, almost saline minerality and subtle notes of wet stone and citrus blossom.
On the palate, the wine is dry, tightly focused and beautifully balanced, with a racy, linear acidity that carries flavors of lemon oil, ripe green apple, white nectarine and grapefruit pith. The limestone core of the site shows through as a firm, stony backbone, giving the wine both structure and length. Hints of fennel, smoke and cool herbal notes emerge with air, promising further complexity as it evolves. The finish is long, clean and saline, suggesting excellent aging potential; in a good cellar, this 2023 Idig Großes Gewächs should develop gracefully for 10–15 years or more, gaining texture and tertiary nuances of honey, brioche and dried citrus.
Production
The Idig vineyard in Pfalz is one of Germany’s most revered Riesling crus, a steep, southeast-facing slope with around 20% gradient that benefits from early morning sun and cooling breezes from the nearby Klausental. These winds ensure excellent air circulation, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and healthily well into the autumn. Beneath the vines lies a massive limestone bedrock, overlaid by Terra fusca soils interlaced with clay and small basalt inclusions from the neighboring Pechsteinkopf—an exceptional combination that produces Rieslings of notable tension, elegance and depth. In the vineyard, a mix of old, partly ungrafted vines and younger plantings is farmed meticulously, with multiple hand harvest passes to pick only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches. The grapes are strictly selected in the vineyard, then gently pressed and fermented with great care—often with spontaneous or carefully managed fermentations—in stainless steel and/or large traditional vessels to preserve the purity of fruit and terroir. Extended lees contact and patient élevage contribute texture, complexity and the signature precision that defines A. Christmann’s Idig GG.
Food & Serving
This structured, mineral-driven Riesling is a superb partner for refined cuisine. It pairs beautifully with delicate seafood such as scallops, turbot, sea bass or sushi and sashimi, as well as with oysters and ceviche, where its acidity and salinity shine. It also complements poultry in light cream sauces, veal, fine charcuterie, and sophisticated vegetable dishes featuring asparagus, fennel, artichoke or citrus. Aged hard cheeses and mild goat’s cheese are also excellent matches. Serve at 9–11 °C (48–52 °F) in a high-quality white wine or Riesling glass to highlight its aromatics and precision. Young bottles will benefit from a brief decant of 30–60 minutes to open the nose and soften the edges of the acidity; older bottles can be served carefully without extended aeration to preserve their delicate mature nuances.
