Production
The Idig vineyard is one of the most celebrated sites in the Pfalz, a relatively steep (around 20% gradient) slope facing southeast, which captures the gentle morning sun and benefits from a constant, drying breeze that promotes healthy, slow-ripening fruit. The soils are dominated by Terra Fusca and limestone, interspersed with small portions of basalt that were historically brought in from the nearby Pechsteinkopf—adding an extra dimension of mineral complexity. Some of the vines here are still ungrafted (wurzelecht), complemented by carefully selected younger plantings that contribute freshness and vitality to the final blend. Harvest is typically done by hand, with rigorous selection in the vineyard to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy Riesling grapes are used for the Großes Gewächs. In the cellar, A. Christmann follows a minimalist philosophy: gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and extended maturation on fine lees in traditional vessels, aiming to express the unique terroir of Idig with clarity, precision and elegance.

It also works wonderfully with aged hard cheeses and semi-soft cheeses with a mild rind. Serve at 10–12°C to showcase its precision and aromatic detail.
