Description
A. H. Riise Black Gem Collection – Black Spinel is a rare limited-edition rum inspired by one of the most elusive gemstones of the West Indies and Central America. Bottled at 46.1% ABV and individually numbered in just 5,570 bottles, it offers a distinctive collector’s appeal alongside a refined, characterful profile. Rooted in the heritage of A. H. Riise and the sugarcane traditions of the Danish West Indies, it brings history and exclusivity together in one bottle.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a light, polished, translucent amber hue. The aroma is subtle yet inviting, with dried fruit, high esters, and a fresh hay-like note that adds lift and complexity.
On the palate, soft oak-driven umami frames flavours of toasted hazelnuts, dried stone fruit, and a delicate touch of tobacco. The finish is long and composed, with oak, gentle tannins, dried fruit peel, and fleeting spice lingering gracefully. Its structure suggests very good aging potential, though it is equally compelling to enjoy now for its layered depth.
Production
This rum is inspired by the fertile soils of the West Indies, where mineral-rich land has long nourished the sugarcane used in the Black Gem Collection. While detailed vinification-style information is not provided, the release is presented as a carefully crafted small batch, with each bottle individually numbered to emphasize rarity and distinction.
Food & Serving
Best enjoyed neat or with a splash of water to open up the oak and dried fruit notes. It pairs well with dark chocolate, roasted nuts, spiced desserts, or a well-aged cigar, and also complements dried fruit-based sweets and nutty cheeses. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 18–20°C, and decanting is not necessary unless you want to let the aromas breathe in the glass for a few minutes.
Producer
A. H. Riise traces its roots back to 1838, when Danish apothecary Albert Heinrich Riise began producing medicinal preparations and spirits on St. Thomas in the Danish West Indies. What started as local craftsmanship grew into an internationally recognized rum brand, helped by early export success and a gold medal at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Now carrying forward that legacy under the Old St. Croix name, the house continues to be celebrated for premium, story-driven releases with strong collector appeal.
